Skip to comments.California poll: Most say Bush tax cuts hurt economy, didn't help them
Posted on 09/22/2010 10:17:09 AM PDT by SmithL
A new poll shows California voters strongly support proposals to allow the Bush tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans to expire -- and overwhelmingly favor policies that allow the middle class to keep more of their earnings instead.
The statewide poll was taken by the Democratic polling firm of Greenberg Quinlan and Rosner for the SEIU. Hardly non-partisan, but Greenberg is well-respected; and the poll has good news for Democratic U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer -- in the middle of a tough re-election battle with Republican Carly Fiorina -- as she backs an end the tax cuts to the rich.
The poll also provides Democrats with a broad blueprint of how to most effectively shape their message heading toward November on the issue. The conclusion from Greenberg, according to a memo obtained by the Chronicle: the party's strongest possible message this fall is that "middle class families and small businesses are the backbone of the economy,'' and the Obama Administration proposal will cut taxes for them and "give them more money to spend" while it "helps the economy, creates jobs, and lowers the deficit."
The poll was conducted Sept. 8-13 among 400 likely voters in California, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Yes, tax the wealth creators. Momma Government will provide.
Nothing stopping CA from enacting it’s own replacement tax to keep these folks happy.
I bet if Obama extends them and renames them the Obama cuts, they will love them.
I really suspect the internals here. It simply doesn’t make any sense and contradicts the results from every other poll on the subject.
Then again, if Californians really are this delusional, then I simply add one more reason to the 6,537 I already had for emigrating to a sane(r) location. Just hoping NC doesn’t catch the Californication bug. They really seem to be trolling to get it.
As the song says: God is great, beer is good, people are crazy.
Fortunately, nature is about to teach Californians that, “you can’t fool Mother Nature”. The titty is dry.
Not surprising since some 60% of Californians don’t pay taxes.
I will bet they polled this in lower income households.
The results would be very different if they had polled those making $75k+.
why do you think California is in the financial condition it is?
Another worthless poll from the turds at SEIU...
This idiocy only proves yet again that most Californians are too stupid to be llowed to live
where is theobama guy who believes in selective killing, to rid the population of people too stupid to be productive citizens?
Note, this does NOT allow to all the good Calif freepers. We know you are trying.
Any wonder the Extreme Lib Dinosaurs Brown and Boxer are still in the running? In any other state they’d be toast. This poll probably is an accurate representation of the views of Californians. They live in fantasyland and when the Ponzi scheme runs out of suckers to fleece, they’ll scream like babies for a federal bailout. Saw it off and let it sink.
Most people in California don’t pay any income tax. There are a few thousand Californians who pay most of the California state income tax. If/when a few of them move out of Califonia.......voila....there is a huge budget shortfall in revenues.
For the last 8 or 9 years people have heard the media and the Democrats denounce the Bush “tax cuts for the wealthy” and rarely heard anyone on the other side explain why they might be a good idea...so naturally a large part of the public will think they are a bad idea (especially since they aren’t being directly affected).
Herded Humans will love what they are told to love...’nuff said.
To many of my fellow Californians are fools and buffoons.
Did you have a job then? Do you have one now? How long do you think you´ll keep it if you do?
At least Bush, for all his faults, was not trying to destroy America as this islamist bastard is hell bent on doing.
YEAH, MAN, TAX CUTS ARE BAD!..................
The headline doesn’t match the data. Is the media lying?
CALIFORNIA, LAND OF THE ETERNAL ELOI...............
the californians must not realize that the tax increases will not discriminate by state. Given the insane cost of living in california, most of those californians will enjoy paying their new taxes.
And in a related story, most people are economic morons.
Isn't this two lies in one?
The Bush tax cuts were across-the-board were they not?
As far as I know there are no proposals from either side for a middle class tax cut. The Dems will never propose such a thing as it violates their goal of crushing anyone with an independent means of living. The GOP don't currently have the votes or the committees to do same.
So...it's either all or nothing with the Bush cuts. Therefore the poll is based on fantasy and fiction.
Bingo. Republicans don't counter Democrat lies forcefully or consistently enough.
Most of them don’t know who Bush is.
And that philosophy has paid off so well for them!!!!
This means that the majority of Californians are on the dole and they want the gravy train to keep rolling.
Most of Congress members are in the wealthy’’ catagory without their gov’t pay,,,,tax the rich? Ha! their gov’t pay covers much of their tax bill on their ‘’other income’’ which is their wealth.
Thirty percent of them aren’t even US citizens!!!
“poll was taken by the Democratic polling firm of Greenberg Quinlan and Rosner for the SEIU. Hardly non-partisan,”
How would any state do with these folks running the poll?
That is BS.
I paid 12K per year to CA when I worked there, and that was
10% of my adj gross.
These people did a poll where Bush did something wrong/bad....I'm shocked.
California is full of mental morons. It is crazy how their own ship is sinking but they are still bragging about how their way is the right way to do things. Absolutely insane.
“The statewide poll was taken by the Democratic polling firm of Greenberg Quinlan and Rosner for the SEIU. ...
The poll also provides Democrats with a broad blueprint of how to most effectively shape their message heading toward November on the issue. “
This explains it — I want to see the questions, looks like a push-poll.
Envy is a deadly sin for a reason.
From the polling firm’s website:
Changing the Framework and Outcome in 2010
Source: Stanley B. Greenberg and James Carville
Client: Democracy Corps
Advice to how Dems can win in November:
“You must first communicate a commitment to change Washington - within this same framework”
In other words, LIE, LIE, and KEEP LYING!
That’s what Dems do best.
The poll I was referring to in my post 37:
The web poll was conducted September 1-2, 2010 among 850 individuals who fall into the following demographic groups: the “Rising American Electorate,” which consists of youth, unmarried women, and minorities; and white non-college educated respondents. The two focus groups were conducted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 7, 2010 with white women aged 45-60 without a college degree and white men age 30-45 with a college degree. All participants were independents, weak Democrats, or weak Republicans.
“This election is not over nor fixed in concrete....Voters are still listening.”
How many of them even pay taxes?
And those who aren't - i.e., the producers - are going elsewhere.
Well SFGate can say whatever it wants, I don’t know one person who wants their taxes to go up in January.
To listen to these folks, you’d think the IRS was the best agency of the government according to Leftists.
How many Leftists do you know that like the IRS?
These folks could word a poll so that the public would say that the sun is cold and the moon is what really causes crops to flourish.
The prevailing California mindset which in large part created the current economic situation out there.
My recommendation is, PLEASE keep it up, California and continue chasing out those e-e-e-evil rich people! Virginia will be most happy to welcome them and their businesses here. We LIKE economic prosperity!
Ditto here as well re: my comment as well.
Ditto that FRiend
Good. Let ‘em expire for California only (unless MA, NY and ILL\ want them to expire too.)
“The bottom line is that Californians LOVE taxes, just as long as some else is paying them.”
From The Article as I used to say at another site: “The statewide poll was taken by the Democratic polling firm of Greenberg Quinlan and Rosner for the SEIU.”
I’d love to read the way the questions were worded, and presented to the public being polled, and I’d like to see the answers from those polled to see just how this Democratic polling firm for the SEIU arrived at their results.
Guaranteed if the SEIU hired a Democrat polling firm to come up with the answers they want, they got ‘em.
A recent Poll by ‘Values Polling Service’ shows that 53% of Californians think that it is okay to sleep with your sister, while 42% were opposed. The other 5% remained undecided (I can make up questions and numbers too).
BS. This poll was taken in downtown San Francisco during a coalition meeting of GLADD and the homeless.
BLAME THE GOP for this ignorance
Public education on facts should be job ONE for what passes as the “other” party
Bush tax cuts created wealth, boosted federal revenue, added 8 million jobs to economy - historic growth
Bush tax cuts led to rich paying MORE tax. When the rich get richer- they PAY MORE TAX.
