Bono's ONE foundation under fire for giving little over 1% of funds to charity

Bono's anti-poverty foundation ONE is under pressure to explain its lavish salaries after it was revealed that only a small percentage of money it raises reaches the needy. The non-profit organisation set up by the U2 frontman received almost £9.6m in donations in 2008 but handed out only £118,000 to good causes (1.2 per cent).

The figures published by the New York Post also show that £5.1m went towards paying salaries.

"ONE said it took no money from the public and that most of its funding came from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation"

Interesting Who is running the B& M Foundation?

With a record like that, Bono has the potential of being the Czar of Charitable Giving in BO’s coven.

No wonder he was trying to convince Bush to give more money to Africa - Bono’s money was already committed elsewhere.

Bono and the rest of U2 are the wealthiest people in Ireland yet they pay almost nothing in taxes due to offshore shell companies in tax havens.

Ireland is broke and Bono wants taxpayers in western countries to shovel more “aid” money to Africa. Europe and the USA have given trillions to Africa since after WW2 and nothing has changed.

Well, it is an anti-poverty foundation; and given that 74% of the donations are going to salaries, I'd say the foundation is doing a good job of fighting poverty among its employees.

This is a typical caricature of celebrity charity. They don’t even pretend to be helping people. All their money goes to lobbying politicians to spend other people’s money and “raising awareness” rather than actually helping the poor and starving on the ground.

I’m sure it buys a lot of ad time, subway posters, plane tickets, limos and catering. I doubt if “The Statesman” and Lord Protector of Africa—Bono even knows or cares what this outfit does on a day-to-day basis. I’m betting that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has become a standard unsupervised monster charity that that has been taken over by careerist staffers and is run for their benefit, while accomplishing very little of substance.

Far better, he said, is finding Westerners to invest in African entrepreneurs or businesses, which would create wealth. Mwenda, like other speakers, described at length the investment opportunities in Africa. (I half expected the pitch to be directly addressed to Doerr et al.) This line of argument enraged Bono, however, who began heckling Mwenda. "Bollocks!" he shouted. "That's bullshit." Bono is a strong supporter of intelligently managed aid. When it came his turn to speak, he said that Ireland's current prosperity is explained by government investment in its people, particularly education. He said that listening to Mwenda was like listening to an African Margaret Thatcher.

doesn't sound very intelligent to me.

It could be worse - it could be like the Ford Foundation and support all kinds of idiot liberal causes (diametrically opposed to the ideas Ford himself supported, btw).

IMHO that is what is wrong in all the impoverished countries we try to help. If the aid doen’t have constant oversight in that country, the blackmarketers and the government steal the money/goods and the people still starve. Or, in Bono’s case the money never even gets there. As long as there is greed there is no solution.

When you look at their site it APPEARS to be about helping Children.
But then when you read the BS. They NEVER commit to actually helping the “Children”. Just talk about helping the Children and the site has lovely pics of small children.
Why is it you scratch a leftie and you find some scam to get money from people, whether ObamaCare or this pathetic money grabber.

The purpose of many "charitable foundations" is to be a means of sheltering money from taxes while conveying it to friends and descendants. Any actual "charity" work is just for maintaining the fig leaf.

From the article

ONE spokesman Oliver Buston has now defended the way the organisation is run, insisting the money is used for promoting its campaign and raising awareness rather than being handed straight to those who need help.

So they are for promoting themselves, not actually doing anything. They will make fine politicians.

A Special Message From Bono

Sep 23rd, 2010 12:29 PM EST

Bono talks about our campaign to ensure no child is born with HIV by 2015, before singing “Moment of Surrender” on stage in Paris on September 18.

Bono:

“Here’s a thought to leave you with: By 2015, we could live in a world where no kids are born with HIV. The first born AIDS-free generation of our lifetime, by 2015. That’s a thought, right? Every day, 1,000 mothers give birth to a child with HIV. And it doesn’t have to be, so sign up to the ONE Campaign, choose RED, support your First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and the Global Fund. They’re here tonight. This is for them. Thank you, you’re our heroes.”

Ofcourse there are always scammers that take advantage of good intentions. ■A United Nations General Assembly Special Session on AIDS in June 2001 concluded with a commitment to create such a fund... ■...which the G8 endorsed and helped finance at their meeting in Genoa in July 2001.

He should be doing gangsta rap with Rev Wright and everybody will get on the soul train that’s gone souless and dance like the undead that they are. You can always see they coming for their designer shades... and that’s what they are in Hades.

I’m willing to bet that there’s no one person right now who knows exactly what every arm of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is doing and where all those billions are going.

It’s probably true that Bill & Melinda went in with no idea what they wanted to accomplish—beyond some nebulous do-gooder ideals—probably the malaria thing and some of the educational stuff. The rest is standard PC charity boilerplate. I’m starting to understand how the conservative givers like Olin Foundation, the Coors and Koch Brothers have accomplished so much more with their carefully targeted millions.

For Bono and Ali’s own picture of their African philanthropy, check out:

http://www.louisvuittonjourneys.com/africa/#/en_US/the-pressad

It’s a vulgar, ostenstatious (and presumably tax-deductible) display of wealth.

Maybe the 1% actually does some good. But why would anybody think a phote of Bono and Ali flying around Africa in private aircraft, stolling in a scenic African landscape, dressed in haute couture, and carrying designer accessories inspires a philanthropic urge in others?

It’s just baffling to me.

My favorite Bono story ...

Bono, lead singer of the rock band U2, is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous.

At a recent U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, he asked the audience for total quiet.

Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone, “Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies.”

From the front of the crowd a voice with a broad Scottish accent pierced the quiet ...

“Well, fuckin stop doin it then, ya evil bastard!”
