(CNSNews.com) - Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) told CNSNews.com at a "Sustainability Education Summit" hosted by the U.S. Education Department on Tuesday that environmental education in schools can "promote the agenda" of climate change and population growth through the influence it has on children.
Like I keep saying over and over again, if you get young people invested in those ideas early on, that will result in those kinds of positive policy developments," Sarbanes told CNSNews.com. "So, whether its climate change, whether its population growth, whether its all these factors that impact the health of our world, raising that awareness early among young people is only going to promote the agenda.
CNSNews.com interviewed Sarbanes after he spoke at a U.S. Department of Education event--"Sustainability Education Summit: Citizenship and Pathways for a Green Economy"--hosted by Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
Sarbanes also said; If we can provide them with a framework and help promote educational opportunities, in the beginning as I said, at the earliest stages, theyll just grab hold of it and take it from there. So in a sense its a wonderful partnership where the adults can create this policy framework and help support it with grant funding and other kinds of initiatives and then the young people are going to take that, and theyre the ones that are really going to push it to the next level.
When asked if students should be taught that global warming is a threat, Sarbanes said: If youre promoting outdoor education, building that into educational programming, they [students] cant help but understand about climate change because theyre going to see the effects of it. Theyre going to go to a local science center , right, and theyre going to learn about the effect that global warming is having right in their own communities.
I mean, for example, the National Audubon Society has an initiative now where they are highlighting the fact that state birds all across the county are actually migrating out of the states that theyre the state bird of because the climate is changing," said Sarbanes.
"Well, a young persons going to understand that if they are engaged in environmental education. So, its going to raise that awareness of climate change that, in turn, I think, can make them stewards, stakeholders in policy changes we have to make to try to address climate change going forward and so, another wonderful result that you can yield if you do this environmental education.
John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology co-authored an essay for the World Bank on "The Meaning of Sustainability" that said that human race must face up to a world of zero net physical growth, reduce material consumption and limit population growth. CNSNews.com asked Rep. Sarbanes if he thinks those ideas would help the U.S. economy.
I think the more you focus on the environment, the need to preserve the environment, protect the environment, the more its going to lead to sensible policies going forward, he responded.
Rep. Sarbanes continued, Sure, theres so much we can do in terms of reducing our consumption of natural resources and thats the lowest hanging fruit right? To implement conservative measures and so forth and again young people are in a position to help drive that new way of thinking.
Keep repeating a lie long enough...
I guess that means he wants to start early so it takes.
Arrest for Fraud and put in Jail.
Mao called it “re-education” camps.
Propaganda plain and simple/
Considering the fact that they have conspired with other countries to enslave we the people with their forced religion, Tried for TREASON would be more appropriate.
Sarbanes is a little late to this party. What agenda does he think has been in place for the last 10-15 years already?
Worry about the United States, and if it is population growth you are worried about, stop the invasion of illegals. Otherwise, take your commie, hitleresque, Anglophobic, PC idiocy, and choke on it.
Like I keep saying over and over again, if you get young people invested in those ideas early on, that will result in those kinds of positive policy developments,”
Liberals no longer have any qualms about expressing what they believe an education is for: learning WHAT to think instead of HOW to think: learning WHAT ARE THE CORRECT IDEAS not HOW TO EVALUATE ALL THE FACTS AND DEVELOP YOUR IDEAS ABOUT THEM.
For a second there, I thought the title was missing the words......more stridently.
It is TIME to DownSize DC!
Eliminate entire Departments starting with the U.S. Department of Education, they are a negative contributor to the education of our youth. There absense will be a positive in all aspects. Improved education quality, more local control and reduced cost. WIN, WIN, WIN!
There IS an endless supply of idiots; or tiny people with Hitlerian ambitions. They are all, soon, going the way of the dinosaurs.
Americans simply won't accept bullshit or overt oppresion, under ANY imaginary pretext.
This is why Newt Gingrich will never ever ever gain my confidence again— They PROMISED to rid this country of the Dept of Ed. and didn’t, in fact Bush crossed the aisle to meet Ted Kennedy to make it bigger and more wasteful than ever. I don’t know what’s going on in the rest of the country, but in our neck of the woods, none of the chilluns are ready for college, according the local paper TODAY, and so they really don’t need any “environmentalism”. They can’t even spell it!!!
Our local public schools are really very good. In spite of the NEA, U.S. Dept. of Education and the Environmental Wako’s.
But this is still Texas.
We have allowed some stupid stuff to happen, but not by public choice. I always carried a pocket knife to school as a kid. Got my first about age 7. My first rifle at about 8-9. My brother and I hunted, fished and terrorized the wildlife along the creeks for years. Life was fun then as a kid. Now it is a bit less free. Sad.
Another huge embarrassment from the Freak State.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
It's time for Maryland to practice some Sarbanes limitation. Let's convince his mom and dad (the former Senator) to reconsider aborting him. Just call it a 145th trimester total birth abortion.
