Oxytocin – the love hormone – could cure shyness
Telegraph U.K. via Drudge ^ | 9/23/10 | Richard Alleyne

Scientists have discovered that the hormone oxytocin could help wallflowers overcome awkwardness in social situations.

The chemical dubbed "the hormone of love" is known to increase empathy and bonding – especially parents and their children. But now researchers have found it improves the social skills of the shy – but has little effect on those who are naturally confident.

The finding could have implications for those with severe social deficiencies, often apparent in conditions like autism. Researchers at Israel's Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment and Columbia University were examining whether the hormone, which occurs naturally in the body could make us more understanding of others.

No thanks. When I get gregarious people don’t like me. At least when I’m shy people can’t make up their mind.

Might as well try it. Nothing else works with autism.

The problem with alcohol is that it also make you stupid. And obnoxious. And puke.

My daughter has social problems. She has a brain injury and didn’t talk until she was 5. She’s 13 now, and she’s different.

The thing that has helped her the most has been getting involved with theater. She’s made friends, and now she doesn’t mind getting up in front of classmates for presentations.

I’d be curious if this would help her some more. She still has a ways to go in her social skills area.

Some of us with 'social problems' as children have grown up to be productive members of society, using our isolation and intense focus to build great things that have improved the situation of mankind.

Let your kid be herself. Trust in God.

And as a reality tip, some social conventions can be 'imprinted' regardless of if they make sense to the social inept. Bathing, eating with the mouth closed, etc... are what Skinner's behavioral science was good at.

Being comfortable with large groups? Maybe never. But that isn't the end of the world.

My brain cells were bathed in oxytocin while I was breast-feeding my four children.

I am no longer shy of babies.

She told me we couldn't afford beer anymore and I'd have to quit.

Then I caught her spending:

$65 on make-up,

$150 for a cut & color,

$30 for a manicure,

$40 for a pedicure,

$50 on vitamins,

$300 on clothes, and

$600 for a gym membership.

I asked how come I had to give up stuff and not her. She said she needed it to look pretty for me.

I told her that was what the beer was for.

I don't think she's coming back.

Mockingbirds drink tequila? Who knew? Maybe that’s why they sleep all day.

That was one of the best replies I’ve ever seen. If it’s cliche I’ve never heard it.

Shortly after the film came out, we got a Siamese cat and I insisted we name him Tequila, short for Tequila Mockingbird.

As a 12 YO, I thought I was so clever.
