Baker catches Patrick in new poll (MA governor's race)
Boston Globe ^ | September 26, 2010 | Frank Phillips and Michael Levenson

Posted on 09/26/2010 5:00:08 AM PDT by reaganaut1

With just five weeks to the election, Republican Charles D. Baker has pulled even with Governor Deval Patrick in a gubernatorial race shaped by anti-incumbent sentiment and unusually high excitement among Republican voters, according to a new Boston Globe poll.

The poll results also suggest that independent Timothy P. Cahill is pulling voters equally from Baker and Patrick, raising questions about the conventional political thinking that his candidacy is undercutting Baker’s chance to defeat the governor in the Nov. 2 election.

In the Globe poll, taken last week, Patrick, a Democrat, won support from 35 percent of likely voters, compared with 34 percent for Baker, a statistical tie given the poll’s margin of error. Cahill, the state treasurer who left the Democratic Party last year, continued to lag far behind with 11 percent. Green-Rainbow candidate Jill Stein got 4 percent, and 14 percent said they remain undecided.

Patrick has lost ground to Baker since the Globe last surveyed voters in June, when the governor led his Republican challenger, 38 to 31 percent. Cahill, damaged by negative ads from the Republican Governors Association, is having difficulty climbing back into a race in which he was once a major contender. His standing improved slightly from June, when he won the support of 9 percent of poll respondents.

The poll indicates that voter turnout on Election Day will be key. The current trend favors Baker, because Republicans are much more enthusiastic about the election than Democrats. Some 78 percent of likely GOP voters say they are excited about the race, compared with only 37 percent of likely Democratic voters. Among the subset of 245 voters surveyed who said they were excited about the race, Baker beat Patrick, 52 to 25 percent.

So, the even number is among registered voters, and among likely voters, Baker leads 2-1?

Gee, Obama is Deval Patrick’s BFF! Maybe he’ll come to MA to campaign for him! We can only hope. Maybe we’ll sweep ‘Marcia’ Coakley out of the attny. general’s office too. Next we target John ...did you know he served in Vietnam?...Kerry. When Kerry was ‘courting’ John Heinz’s widow, the Washington Post social column said he was ‘stalking’ her and facing bankruptcy. Now he’s the richest man in the senate. Who knew.

If Pravda-By-The-Charles says it’s even that means that Baker’s up by 10 points!! Looks like DNC Headquarters’ plan to offer Cahill a judgeship or a lucerative lobbying gig if he pretended to leave the RAT Party and then pretend to be to Coupe Deval’s right has failed.Last January was the first time in mmany,*many* years that I was even a *little* proud of being a Gay Stater....perhaps this November will be the second.

Since this comes from the Globe things must really be tough for Patrick. The Globe published a poll a week or so before the senate election last January showing Coakley with an insurmountable lead over Scott Brown. Didn’t quite turn out that way.

Baker's pro-abortion and pro-homo "marriage." He's another bloodless Weld RINO. I'm sick of them, and I'm seriously considering blanking the governor's race.

OTOH, I'm very excited about the congressional races. We have 12 dems in 12 seats. It's been that way for a loooong time. I'm hoping that we pick up three of them.

Don't know if you're a Howie Carr fan but if you are you've probably heard him mention that there was a time when Kerry was between billionaire heiresses when he was *living* in his Chrysler.

And if you do Coupe Deval and all the folks at RAT Headquarters in Caracas (or have they moved to Tehran?) will be eternally grateful. As imperfect as Baker might be Coupe Deval 1000 times worse.

No,11 RATS in 12 seats.....10 Reps and "Live Shot".And as of 2012 we'll only have 11 seats...or maybe just 10 (I've read that we're *sure* to lose 1 and might lose 2).

Deval is completely useless, but is he any worse than any other Dem governor we've had? The legislature, even our Dem legislature, is constrained somewhat by fiscal realities. I really don't see Baker making much of a difference.

And the MOST important issues that we face are the social issues, and practically, the appointment of judges. I don't trust Baker any more than Coupe Deval.

I want a real alternative to the commies.

You're right about our representation. I thought we had 12 reps, not 10. We're 10 for 10 with Dems. I'm hoping that we pick up three. We've got a lot of GREAT, Tea Party-type Republican challengers. In this year of the Tea Party, it's very disappointing that we have such a crappy gubernatorial candidate.

I knew that the race would tighten in the final weeks but I don't think we've seen the real Baker "surge" yet. At this stage in the Scott Brown campaign (six weeks prior to Jan 19), it was still conventional wisdom that the Democrat (Martha Coakley) would win easily.

The Scott Brown campaign didn't catch fire until the final 3-4 weeks.

Most voters in Massachusetts still do not know who Charlie Baker is. Though a lot of them know that they do not want another four years of Deval Patrick, so that's a good thing Baker has going for him.

This whole Tom Cahill candidacy is a smokescreen to get Patrick re-elected. However, it looks like it's not working and Cahill's top campaign workers are now leaving the campaign. Cahill is a Democrat through-and-through and an ally of Deval Patrick, no matter what he says on the campaign trail.

Charlie Baker is no prize package either, but like with Scott Brown, it's much better than the alternative and it will be nice to defeat the Democrat machine once again.

With respect to converting Massachusetts into a red state, it's a long-term proposition. Baby steps...

Baker is a crypto-RomneyCARE crypto-ObamaCARE supporter.

Baker increased premiums on health care by 150% even
when the costs DECREASED.

Baker would not allow a GOP primary to force Romney on the
captive public again.

Baker lies about Cahill who is against RomneyCARE and
is not with Deval Patrick as some here, and Baker, lie about.

How about some truth?

Best of luck to you! Yours is a beautiful part of the state, but unfortunately it has been dominated by the sort of moonbats who keep pulling the handle for John Olver every two years like Pavlov’s pooches in anticipation of some more goodies. There are signs that things may be changing, with four or five truly competitive congressional races in Massachusetts, which having lived there for a number of years I would not have believed possible even recently.

Howie Carr thinks Cahill’s implosion is happening too early. Patrick can now focus on Baker and try to knock him down.

In the Scott Brown race the Globe had a poll just before
the election saying Brown was down by 15. Not sure if I can
trust this poll. I will say that while the old saying goes “Lawn signs don’t vote”, you see a lot more Baker-Tisei
ones than Patrick ones (those, put up usually by hacks,
are starting to show up now). In the 6th district if
lawn signs are an indication, Bill Hudak, whom I helped
to interview on Salem State Radio last week, could beat
incumbent John Tierney. (Howie Carr on Tierney: “He’s
so lightweight he needs to carry rolls of coins in his
pocket so he doesn’t blow over.”)

Some on here are not fond of Baker. The choices come down to him vs. Deval Patrick. You would prefer to have 4 more
years of Deval? More tax increases coming, more hacks,
more big government. Even if Baker is not as good as you say, he can’t be as bad as Deval.

Imagine if Bielat beats Frank in the 4th (longshot) or
Perry beats Keating in the 10th (more likely). Imagine
Polito as next treasurer, Connaughton as next auditor etc

Supposedly even unions are abandoning him, some articles have said. And talk to the rank and file union people (I’m one
myself, APWU) at the post office where I work and you’ll find they ain’t wild about Obama even if the union leaders are.
(They used scare tactics during Bush years of what would happen to us; didn’t happen. One union newsletter during the ‘04 campaign said to vote for Kerry ‘even if you have concerns over things like terrorism, don’t be swayed—vote

my comment to Globe:

raccoonradio2 wrote:
I read part about Republican voters being more enthusiastic 2-1 over Dems, but there aren’t too many registered Republicans in this state. But the low numbers for Patrick among the many unenrolleds (like myself; am for Baker) could be the real story. Could well be something like 45-42, Baker.

I know “lawn signs don’t vote” but you see a lot more Baker-Tisei ones. The Patrick ones are starting to go up now. State workers, teachers’ union members? (Speaking of which Patrick has failed to get many union endorsements. What does that tell you about his support?)

Cahill is a hack-Dem who took a Dem ballot in primary to help out some friends despite saying he left the party. Whether Deval wins or loses, he will be welcomed back into the D party and maybe get a job in fed or state govt.

How is his radical gay running mate a victory for Conservatism ? If a Socialist is to win, let it be Patrick and let him and HIS Democrat party own their disastrous policies. Haven’t we had enough Democrat agents hijacking the GOP ? At least Cahill won’t harm the party.

Fact is, the Rbots want to defeat Patrick for the sake of defeating Patrick. I’m sorry, but when you have a candidate/ticket as viscerally offensive and ANTI-Conservative as Baker/Tisei, it’s nothing but a Pyrrhic victory, absolutely less than useless.

FM, Raccoon's a good guy. If I had to speculate, he wants the person with the “R” next to their name to win. Normally that's the way it should be, but the GOP put two of the most horsesh*t candidates possible up for Gov. (and Lt. Gov).

IF, IF the GOP had even a decent Lt. Gov candidate (Polito or Connaughton) MAYBE I could have voted for the ticket, a la McCain/Palin. But no, they handed out diarrhea and tried to pass it off as chocolate mousse. F*ck them, I won't touch it.

Baker/Tisei winning would be nothing but a Pyrrhic victory, no doubt.
