Local law enforcement and federal agents conducted a checkpoint operation Tuesday afternoon in Douglas County, the Federal Air Marshal Service told the AJC.
"This is a live operation intent on deterring would-be terrorists or criminal activity," Nelson Minerly, spokesman for the federal agency, told the AJC.
The operation created a big distraction to motorists heading eastbound on I-20 in rush hour, and many motorists let the AJC and the WSB traffic center hear about it.
But the operation, which also involves the Transportation Security Administration, is top-secret before it happens, Minerly said.
“We don’t advertise when they’re going to happen or when they’re going to be," Minerly said.
Mostly trucks were being checked, Minerly said. Shortly before 6 p.m., nothing had been recovered in the operation, he said.
"There's no specific threat," Jon Allen, regional spokesman for the TSA, told the AJC.

I owned a trucking company and drove for 4 years myself and that NEVER happens. There is something else going on here that doesn’t pass the smell test.

Today (near Atlanta)the Feds had mobile X-ray (for full sized truck and trailer), bomb dogs and radiation detection equipment at this truck roadblock.
They have been spotted with regularity on the weigh stations outside Savannah (and probably other port cities).
I saw them more than 2 months ago, but this is the first time they have been “inland”.
Hard to imagine that they don’t have at least some assets in place. Might be a good time for all CCW holders to remember to tote along a few extra magazines.

I understand the weight stations which does happen on occasion if they suspect, or are looking, for something. The situation here seems to be that they are out on the open road and that is totally bizarre. Something serious is going on.
You also need to know that information travels pretty fast and no truck with something on it that they don’t want to have found is NOT going to be on that road after the first half hour.
They must have intel that a rig has a truck bomb/worse headed to a specific location/area and are trying to find it. If these terrorists listen to the news though, they’ll know exactly where NOT to travel.
I know several DCSO deputies....they wouldn’t say jack. They had an x-ray machine out there.

I don’t hold a CCW but can open carry and can store an unloaded, locked firearm in my vehicle. Maybe it’s time to do so, with a couple of speed loaders.
