Abel Maldonado goes for Gavin Newsom's jugular, but might have cut himself

If Tuesday's opening debate in the lieutenant governor's race is a sign of things to come, buckle up.

Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado may be the incumbent, but he was on the attack early against Mayor Gavin Newsom, needling the mayor for his handling of the Cosco Busan oil spill, his wife's investments in oil companies and San Francisco's sanctuary city policy in a roughly 50-minute radio debate on KQED's Forum program.

The mayor, for his part, tried to paint Maldonado as out of touch with the state on environmental issues and the embodiment of Sacramento political gridlock.

Host Scott Shafer repeatedly shifted the discourse to topics currently facing the state, like how current ballot measures would affect taxes and the budget deficit, but Maldonado's sniping continued.

The result, according to Corey Cook, a San Francisco State University political scientist, was that Newsom came across as having "a better grasp of the issues," while Maldonado "seemed like he was swinging from his heels."

His website doesn’t say whether he’s for sanctuary cities, doesn’t mention the gay agenda etc...but it does have a lot of ‘fluff’ on it.

Maldonaldo is a bridge too far where my vote is concerned.

He is a traitor to the principles of the Republican Party.

Hopefully enough Republicans have enough principles to boot his butt to the curb in November.

We shoud not be rewarding the bad behaviour of those hired to represent us with new jobs at a higher position of respect and authority.

Since Lt. Guv is so unimportant to the whole scheme of things, I’ll be voting for none of the above in this category. No need in encouraging another RINO.

Anyone but ‘Any-twosome’ Newsom will get my vote.

Hate Maldonado if you want, but we elevate Gavin Newsom to statwide office at our own peril. Newsom is a ruthless, amoral, cur; he’s a self-aggrandizing, ambitious lech. He must be destroyed before he metastasizes.

Still... you have to enjoy the sight of the number two politician in the state being an Hispanic Republican attacking a white liberal for making San Francisco a sanctuary state.

This is one race I will sit out. The Lt. Governors main job is to check the obits every day, and if the governor is not there, go play golf.

Actually, he does sit on a few boards and commissions where he can make a difference, but Maldonado is a tax-raising RINO who used his vote to raise taxes in order to get an initiative on the ballot to change our primary system to a “top 2” system. So the top 2 candidates in the primary, regardless of party, advance to the general election. So in many districts, you will see Dem against Dem rather than Dem against Pubbie in the general election. This was designed to allow “moderates” like Maldonado a greater chance to be elected.

Maldonado had one chance to earn my vote. When Arnie went to China, Abel could have signed the appeal in the Prop. 8 case on behalf of CA, but he refused to do so, even though he had time to sign other legislation that could have waited until Arnie came back. So Abel will not get my vote.
