AK-47 Toting Felon Killed By LAPD in a Shootout Near Downtown L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- There was a deadly shooting Tuesday between LAPD officers and a felony suspect who opened fire on them with an AK-47 assault rifle.

The shooting happened late Tuesday afternoon in the 1600 block of Temple Ave, not far from Echo Park.

LAPD officials say officers were following the convicted felon through the Downtown L.A. area when suddenly he stopped, stepped out of his car and opened fire at officers with the assault rifle.

Officers immediately returned fire with their weapons, striking the gunman several times and killing him.

None of the officers was hit in the gunfight nor were any innocent by-standers injured.

I understand this was quite a shootout at close range. I heard the vehicle the suspect was driving came up as a vehicle that was recently carjacked when the traffic stop occurred.

The dead shooter is under the sheet, at center of image.

“Assault rifle”? My ass! Unless the shooter had selectable fire or was firing full auto, then it was not an “assault rifle.”

More media hype aimed at promoting their anti-gun agenda at every occurrence where some nut goes on a rampage.

This had got to be wrong!

The man was a convicted felon, there is no way he would break the law by owning an illegal firearm. No way, no how- gun bans prevent this type of criminal behavior!

BTW, this is not believed to be a traffic stop as mentioned, but was reported as the suspect shooter drove down a dead end road, and had no way out....The shooter suspect stops his vehicles, exits the vehicle, and really opened up rapidly on the LEOs...

To be honest, I'm surprised no officers were shot...

However, they had time to ready themselves with this guy, as the vehicle came up really hot regarding carjacking as they were following the vehicle.

Police train for this scenario all the time, Perps watch movies and tv shows. Cops hit their targets center mass.... perps hit the pavement.

Well, that explains the noisy commotion and gunshots I heard. I was working a few blocks from there and swore I heard gunshots, yelling and screaming while I was on my phone with the lady friend.

Outside of all of the real stuff happening this still isn't that unusual in LA, cuz we are always filming some type of gunfights and chases in and around the downtown area. You know, In this case I suppose it was kinda like real life imitating art :-)

Based on the events, not necessarily true Frank,

The officers following the vehicle already knew the vehicle was involved in a carjacking a day earlier....I understand they followed it for quite a while and when the suspect went down the deadened road, he stopped, exited and started shooting.

You can bet the rent the officer's probably had their shotguns out and met this guy with substantial simultaneous fire.

I thought it was illegal for covicted felons to own weapons. I also thought AK-47's were illegal in CA.

Ended really well...You bet...

This had to be one really scary event, for even the most seasoned cop...

Reminds me of what happened some years ago, when it didn't end so well for a LASD Deputy when an illegal alien exited a van at during a late night traffic stop. The illegal opens up on the patrol unit, shredding the patrol unit with lots of rounds, and the driver deputy took one in the head..

Long story short, the deputy survived after tons of therapy and they caught the cockroach down in Mexico, and brought the SOB back.

Forgot the mention, this incident too occurred when that suspect to had an AK and opened up on the patrol unit. The patrol unit had a whole lot of bullet holes in it.

Obvious overreaction by the police. Surely they could have taken him down with one shot. Probably non lethal force should have been attempted first. Did they even ask him to surrender before they opened fire. /sarc.

If they know he was a convict, you would think that by now they would know his name. But maybe saying his name might create the impression that all the people of his kind “tote” AK-47s. And the MSM knows that “toting” has a huge stigma.

Let's make a distinction here, W. These cops were doing their jobs correctly, putting 20 bullets into a bad guy who shot at them.

Not in the earlier FR Post where some off duty state policeman stops the motorcyclist and gets dirty because the citizen videotapes the event, then enlists his fellows to search the citizens home (without signed search warrant) and then charge the guy with a plethora of charges just to show the citizen some pain.

Two different situations, one handled correctly and one an abomination. You see the difference, don't you W?

No distinction here. Just good police work by good cops who did their job as they should have. I don’t stick up for cops when they abuse their power or are corrupt. Same with members of the military or any other profession for that matter. I don’t let a few bad apples ruin the bunch. People like you don’t like police officers in general probably because you have had incidents with the law most likely on the wrong side of it. If you want to post links to me here on FR give it your best shot.I already have a hundred ready for you and the time to post them. Take care of yourself Zuben.
