How does any of that explain your view that an agreement between roommates is a “naive expectation at best?” Isn’t that what you said?

Remember most of these students end up being roommates to complete strangers. Would you expect that type of respect from someone that you really don’t know or someone that really doesn’t know you?

I certainly wouldn’t take that chance nor would most reasonable and mature individuals.

Totally agree with you. This is not a gay issue or a political issue. It’s about revolting and disgusting actions that deserve the most severe penalty available.

You wrote:

I’m not so sure any judge in America would agree with you. You’re basically saying it is okay for someone to film and broadcast your image on the internet without your permission while you have sex - just because it is in your own dorm room. If his door was shut, that poor gay kid had every expectation of privacy under the law when it came to being unknowingly filmed and broadcast on the internet.

"At least the 18 year old kid was man enough to jump off of the George Washington bridge."

What a freak. Who says a thing like that. --a gutless and heartless human being.

I got it from my college roommate and he got it from me. When someone makes an agreement with me I expect them to live up to it. Even when I was 18 and even younger. Sometimes I was disappointed but I still had an expectation that they would honor the agreement and I don't think that was unreasonable.

No one ever broke an agreement with me with the intention of humiliating me. I think it is even more reasonable to expect that that not happen.

“Ravi was tired of walking into his dorm room and catching his roommate being intimate with guys”

The article accompanying this story on another thread stated that the deceased asked for use of the room until midnight.

From that article-

“Roommate asked for the room till midnight,” read the post from Dharun Ravi, 18. “I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”

Not sure how to take your comment...

I'm thinking it was tragic that a person would take their own life.

And you think it was a man-up thing?

Interesting. Apparently a long time friend of Ravi's doesn't think Ravi's actions had anything to do with Clementi's homosexuality. Unlike a number of posters who concluded that without any evidence at all.

Zhuang told ABC News he believes Ravi was excited to go to Rutgers and believes the media portrayals of Ravi as possibly homophobic or a serious prankster are not true. "I'm in shock, I didn't expect this to happen and I am just speechless. He's normally very nice and I don't think that this is a representation of him," said Zhuang. "He's very very open minded and he, like if it had been a girl in the room it wouldn't have been any different," he said.

If you're both intelligently creative and--let's say--committed to a particular set of beliefs, there are multiple ways to fit such a statement into your set of beliefs. Since I have no doubt that such a combination of creativity and commitment exists in this world of ours, I'll leave the generation of such ways as an exercise for the reader.

Maybe I haven't read carefully enough, but I'm also mildly surprised that no one in this thread has publicly commented on "he's normally very nice." Aren't they always?

“I’m not so sure any judge in America would agree with you.”

Well, I can’t speak to every law in every state; but, apparently the state in which this incident occurred has some stringent privacy laws.

“..that poor gay kid had every expectation of privacy under the law”

Did you know that heterosexual students have sex in their dorm rooms too? Actually, both homosexual and heterosexual students have sex in many different places on campus and off.

As far as expectations, if I desire ironclad privacy, I will choose a truly secure place in which to carry on my activities.

I wonder how many times this student had sex in his bedroom at home?

Could care less if we’re ok or not. I wouldn’t wish what happened to that young man’s family on my worst enemy. Not even on your family (if you have one that puts up with you).

Sorry, I read “Young Werther” in high school when we were supposed to read “I’m OK, You’re OK”
Damaged goods ever since.

So am I. I don’t know what that has to do with having an expectation of performance in an agreement. I certainly don’t think it is naive to hold that expectation. But I do everything possible to honor my agreements which may color my view.
