McDonald's Corp. has warned federal regulators that it could drop its health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 hourly restaurant workers unless regulators waive a new requirement of the U.S. health overhaul.
The move is one of the clearest indications that new rules may disrupt workers' health plans as the law ripples through the real world.
Trade groups representing restaurants and retailers say low-wage employers might halt their coverage if the government doesn't loosen a requirement for "mini-med" plans, which offer limited benefits to some 1.4 million Americans.

This is what obozo wants. The 30,000 workers and many others will end up with the obamacare plan. It will cost much less as more workers are added, right?/s
Hey America! How's that ObamaCare thing workin' for ya? You're going to find out on April 15th.
How’s that McPresidency going for you Barack?
And Obama smiles because he’s looking for a government only system to replace our current private health system.
This is what The Kenyan and his central planners wanted to happen. It’s all by design.
Why more Americans aren't outraged over this, I don't know. When that bill was being passed back in March, millions of Americans should have stormed the capitol like the French did to the Bastille.
I know that’s what Bambi had in mind, but what is he going to do when the courts knock out his little plan as unconstitutional? What it will end up with is no insurance for anyone. If you want it, you have to buy it yourself.
Or they can sell hamburgers for $6 each!
GO GALT McD’s!!
That's the way it always should have been. I think around WWII people started getting covered through their employer as a sort of "wage increase" and it was a mistake that led us to where we are today.
If Obama's plan collapses (and I think it will) we may have a chance to transition to individuals choosing plans from across the country. I'd love to see legislation which opens up additional choices rather than steers us into a rotten single payer plan.
Obama hates America and he’s laying waste to as much of America as he can before he’s thrown out of office.
Yeah Andy likes it cause he got lots of money to make that ad spot for Obama. I can not stand Obama, anyone who voted for him and any of the liberals in congress. These people are threatinging the America I know and love and grew up in. I dont want to live in a Communist country
The new McDonald’s healthcare plan: Have a Big Mac.
That makes two of us. I’m too old to go commie now. I’ve been an American all my life.
No, actually it happend in the late 50’s to early 60’s. It was during the wage freeze (Nixon?). It was the only way the employers could give their employees something extra.
Maybe they didn’t know what’s in the bill, or still don’t like me...and you.
It would be great if we could buy our own. I’ve been paying into the “system” for 48 years and I think I’ve put in two claims (and they were minor stuff). Wish I had all that money back now.
Actually, I think that might be a good thing. If we are buying it ourselves, it may affect packages/pricing offered.
As much as I HATE the whole “healthcare reform” crap, I must say that insurance companies haven’t done much to help their cause, and even got into bed with the administration with the promise of all these new subscribers. Now they will find out that you just can’t trust a bunch of liars.
Nancy said we'd find out what's in it after it passed.
Personally, I think that medical savings accounts with policies for catastrophic events would be the way to go.
Quite correct. It was a way around wartime wage controls.
More Americans would be outraged if our Republican representatives were getting out there and explaining these things to them. That they’re not, is one reason I’m not holding my breath for repeal. They could ride these events already occurring, as opposed to the lies people were told, all the way to a clean sweep if they wanted to.
One wonders what good ole Julio thinks of this move.
I thought it was during Nixon’s wage freeze. I can tell you this, when I was 17 my first job was to assist in doing the payroll at a small manufacturing company. Single insurance was $.97 a week and family coverage was $2.54.
When I read and studied about the Declaration Of Independance in School I assure you the word Creator was not left out like Obama seems to do not once but twice he is a fraud and an evil one at that. It is a sad state of affairs to be sure :(
Then, or later, this was made a tax exempt benefit.
Why you are thinking of Nixon is he proposed what amounted to a Socialized European Medical System and he was handed his head.
That was one of the reasons he found out he didn't have any friends among Republicans when the Democrats went after him.
The next several Presidents took the lesson to heart ~ then we get to Obama. He thinks he and Nixon are different. All I can say is Nixon was a smart guy. Obama isn't.
You bring up an excellent point. Without the deep pockets of insurance companies, where will the cash cow be located for all the lawyers to drain?
The first warehouse job I had cost $2.00 a week for family coverage and this was a non-union job from 1984-1997.
Today, at a different company, I pay $29.73 a week for my wife and I. Kids would be extra per child. Probably will cancel after this year. My wife has coverage and both will go up so much it doesn’t pay to have both.
Dumbo has told a lot of lies over the years. This is just one in a long list of lies.
And I pay $75.00 a week for single coverage. The company only picks up $90.00 a month.
But didn’t Nixon put in wage and price controls?
This had no impact on health care arrangements ~ the laws were already in place by the 1960s.
The question concerned when the employer provided health care system started, and the answer (in the USA) is "during WWII".
Hmmm, $2.00 for family coverage in the 60’s and now it’s more like $125.00.
What's happened since that time is very simple ~ medicine has advanced and they can cure stuff you used to die from. That costs something.
Would you like fries with that Hope and Change?
Methinks it is also what McDonald's wants.
We do need to find a way to decouple health care from employment, it’s one reason why so many people in their late 40s, and 50s have a hard time finding work, companies don’t want to bear the health insurance costs that come with older workers.
Yes and attornys have made billions in mal practice suits. Without that medical costs may have only doubled instead of going nuclear.
Agreed. It should never have been allowed in the first place.
Why employers got a write-off while private parties and the self-employed did not is one of those "equal protection before the law" goodies I've never really understood. If corporations are "persons" they can live like the rest of us.
If Obama and the other Marxist Liberals get their way, they will eventually force McDonald’s out of business completely by over-taxing their “unhealthy” food.
What he wants is to see the Insurance companies go down...this administration will immediately pass regulations on them so they cannot raise their premiums yet require them to fullfill the conditions of this healthbill and their new regulations.... Important to remember the banking industry is tied into the Insurance Companies...... so the handwriting on the wall isn’t hard to figure out. The banks know what is up and are protecting their own interests...they see what’s coming from this Administration.
I promise to only eat at McDonalds from now on!
I love you Ronald. Stick a fork in 0bammy, he’s done!
Methinks it is also what McDonald's wants. If so, then why did they wait all these years to do so?
I worked for McDonald's (on the corporate side) for almost all of the last decade, and based on everything I ever saw there, they are honest and decent, and really do care about their employees.
There is a limit to anything. What with all the demands that private insurers pay for illegals and indigents in their hospital bills, eventually the costs get out of hand. Once uncle sugar offers a way out without hurting their people, what do you think they're going to do?
There is a limit to anythingAgreed.
I don't believe that they were just waiting for the chance to "screw" their employees. But they aren't going to ruin the company to accommodate Obama and the Dems fantasy about healthcare, either.
