“We moved to New Mexico for my wife’s job, and I needed eighteen months to land mine. Two years later, my wife took a job back in Texas, and I was once again looking for work.”

Pretty much “Game over” for this guy from here on, hayna? Or no?

From the article: “....Many organizations, particularly state agencies or universities, try to place RIF employees in similar jobs. Not mine. No, it has riffed about 100 positions in the past year, saving about $10 million of its nearly $1 billion budget. One hundred lives and families forced to face their greatest economic fears during the worst downturn since the Great Depression just to save one-tenth of one percent in salary and benefits.....”

So, saving about $10 million in salary and benefits for state agencies for unnecessary jobs is a bad thing? The money comes from the taxpayers, correct? I think unemployment benefits run quite a bit less than $100,000 per year per person. What am I missing?

So the company should have kept them all on just for the heck of it?

I’ll save my tears.

The world could do with less PR guys anyway.

I agree with the poster. Your math needs to be checked.

Good for you!

I think the point was that 10 million is one percent of one billion, not one-tenth of one percent... anyway, good luck with your job search!

According to this LinkedIn Profile, Mr. Powell worked at the University of Houston. I would not think that's a State Agency.

As for the bad math our author has (speciously?) used, the one percent (his figure) reduction of what I suspect is GROSS revenues would actually be a very attractive when compared with the NET revenue.(I don't think the University of Houston is a state school, btw)

Yes, error in editing. Started out with one figure, changed to the other, but original not deleted. Will fire the editor. And, yes, we regret the error.
