McAllen Man Shot and Likely Killed on Falcon Lake

ZAPATA - Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez, Jr. tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS armed pirates shot at a McAllen couple on Falcon Lake this afternoon. The husband and wife were jetskiing near Old Guerrero. One their way back to shore, pirates in a boat pulled up next to them and started shooting at them. The husband was hit, possibly in the head. The woman tried to save him and ended up being at shot as well. She had to turn around and leave her husband in the water. She fears he's dead.

This was bound to happen, given what has been going on at that lake. Flacon Lake is on the Mexican border.

"The shooting happened at Falcon Lake, where state officials earlier this year warned boaters that pirates were patrolling the waters. The 60-mile long lake was formed by construction of a dam on the Rio Grande that was dedicated in 1953 by then Mexican President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower."

The Rangers are Texas Law Enforcement. If they were given a chance to clean up that situation at the lake, it would be fixed pronto.

The problem is that the lake is on an international boundary. The boundary is controlled by a bi-lateral commission, and the Mexicans have veto power over what we do. Both governments could and should jointly police that lake. Or the Mexicans should agree that we do it. They know it is hotbed of drug smuggling, and all they have done is warn the law-abiding of both countries to say away, instead of going in there and asserting authority.
