Our former NR colleague, Joe Sobran, passed away today after a long battle with a variety of ailments. He was relatively young, just 64, and while physically beaten at the end, he also departed spiritually triumphant.
Surely, in short order, there will be ample reflection much of it critical on the hyper-talented, hyper-controversial writer. There will be a recounting of his history at NR, the break, the following years, and Joes soured relationship with WFB (happily, they rekindled their friendship before Bill passed away). Good, lets discuss all that, and more. But later. Right now, let us, if only for a minute, pray for the repose of his soul, to hope: That he abides now with his old boss, and they together with our Creator. For the peace that proved so elusive in this lifetime, Joe, may you now have it.
After tens of millions of "procedures," has America lost anything? Another Edison, perhaps? A Gershwin? A Babe Ruth? A Duke Ellington? Nobody looks like a genius in the womb, but if this "right" had existed earlier, we might all be whistling in the dark, with fewer tunes to whistle. As it is, we will never know what abortion has cost us all.
You will be missed.
Wonderful, brilliant man. He was unfairly pilloried at the end of his life. Likely drove him to an early grave.
Very weird...I thought about Sobran a couple days ago, wondering whatever happened to him.
RIP, Mr. Sobran.
A fine writer and an even greater man. I will miss him.
A dead Anti-Semite.
As we say in the Christian East: Memory Eternal! Memory Eternal! Memory Eternal!
That was mean and untrue to boot
He also became closely involved with neo-Nazi David Irving, leading to his firing from National Review. It was indeed a tragic shame that he departed from William F. Buckley/Ronald Reagan conservatism into racism and anti-semitism. May God forgive him.
That is what I remember.
Disagreeing with Bill Buckley is no mortal sin...heck, his own son voted for the baby-murdering Obama...and as I recall, Jonah Goldberg and Ann Coulter don’t see eye to eye on political philosophy either
Getting fired from NR, especially in the latter days doesn’t say much.
He gave the single best explanation of the workings of the left I have ever seen:
(Sound of purring shutting down in his memory.)
I know little about Joe Sobran, but I suspect that nonstatist meant that Sobran at least once said something critical about Jews without retraction. That’s the current threshold for “anti-semitism.”
