Man leaves behind 1905-page suicide note

shot himself at Harvard Yard on September 18.

His family and about 400 friends received the 1,905-page suicide note in a posthumous e-mail.

In the note Heisman wrote that he took his life as part of a philosophical exploration he called "an experiment in nihilism."

The lengthy document included 1,433 footnotes, a 20-page bibliography, over 1,700 references to God and 200 references to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

Heisman wrote, "Every word, every thought and every emotion come back to one core problem: life is meaningless... The experiment in nihilism is to seek out and expose every illusion and every myth, wherever it may lead, no matter what, even if it kills us."

So, how'd the ol' "experiment" work out there, dude?

This is always the ultimate conclusion to sincere atheism. The atheist, existentialist Camus acknowledged the inevitable nihilism which atheism leads to leaves only one real philosophical question - “why continue to go on living?”

I think the moral here is if you’re into nihilism, it’s better to go the marmot route than it is to go the long philosophical treatise route.

Of course, you do risk losing the odd ear or toe now and then, but still. . .

I’ve learned one thing from watching Lt. Columbo: Never trust a suicide note that isn’t handwritten.

A tip to any authors seeking fame and acclaim through nescroscopy: Keep it short. It you can’t explain you suicide in less than 200,000 words, you’ll lose your audience. In fact if a suicide takes more than a paragraph or two explain, it’s probably not worth doing.

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively outnumbers the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?"

Ecclesiastes 1 (New International Version)

Ecclesiastes 1

Everything Is Meaningless
 1 The words of the Teacher, [a] son of David, king in Jerusalem:

 2 "Meaningless! Meaningless!"
       says the Teacher.
       "Utterly meaningless!
       Everything is meaningless."

 3 What does man gain from all his labor
       at which he toils under the sun?

 4 Generations come and generations go,
       but the earth remains forever.

 5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
       and hurries back to where it rises.

 6 The wind blows to the south
       and turns to the north;
       round and round it goes,
       ever returning on its course.

 7 All streams flow into the sea,
       yet the sea is never full.
       To the place the streams come from,
       there they return again.

 8 All things are wearisome,
       more than one can say.
       The eye never has enough of seeing,
       nor the ear its fill of hearing.

 9 What has been will be again,
       what has been done will be done again;
       there is nothing new under the sun.

 10 Is there anything of which one can say,
       "Look! This is something new"?
       It was here already, long ago;
       it was here before our time.

 11 There is no remembrance of men of old,
       and even those who are yet to come
       will not be remembered
       by those who follow.

To him everything is meaningless.
I want to study this “note” because I think if you become intellectually immersed in Nietzsche, Marx, etc. you will eventually submit to insanity. “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom”, to deny God is the beginning of insanity.

But Camus also realized that meaninglessness, far from engendering despair, provided the ultimate liberation. If life is meaningless, then the very purpose of living becomes to assign it whatever meaning we want!

Heisman wrote, "Every word, every thought and every emotion come back to one core problem: life is meaningless...

I am always sorrowful when a seemingly intelligent person is unable to come to a rational conclusion about anything in life because they make relatively simple things complex through conceited imagination.

Mr. Heisman, maybe your life was meaningless because you filled it with meaningless pursuits ... whereas we stupid dumb slaves of Jesus Christ live each day with meaning and purpose; even when the day brings calamity or trouble.

The loss of one life is heartbreaking to God ... what could have been eternal joy for this individual ... is now eternal loss which will never be satisfied.

Imagine the horror of this person, who decided to take his life in some grand intellectual experiment to prove the meaningless of life ... is now, at this very moment ... still alive ... but completely and utterly ... without hope.

Lets us all that name the name of Jesus Christ pray for this mans family; that they would not be as foolish.

Which is not meaning at all, merely transitory preference. While ultimately disappoints. The finiteness of death precludes all meaning. Even Sartre acknowledged this when he stated that, for any meaning, finite man must have an infinite reference point. "All is vanity under the sun".
