Skip to comments.Snowe, Collins call for GOP unity as tea party sacks moderates (Tea Party targeting Maine RINOs)

Two years ago, Barack Obama and congressional Democrats rode a wave of voter disenchantment into power. Many Republicans, even in some traditional strongholds, were swept aside.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was an exception. She didnt defeat Democrat Tom Allen. She trounced him, 61-39 percent of the vote, a landslide victory political analysts attributed to Collins popularity with moderates, a standing shared by her Maine colleague, U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, also a Republican.
Two years later, the same moderate image that protected Collins from the blue wave could make Snowe vulnerable to the red one advanced by the tea party. The movement has already sacked several GOP moderates, raising questions about whether voices such as Collins and Snowes still have a place in the party.
The issue was made more prominent following U.S. Rep. Mike Castles recent defeat in Delawares GOP primary for the U.S. Senate. Castles loss produced strong comments from Collins and Snowe, who both found the outcome troubling.
Snowes reaction also came on the heels of a Public Policy Polling survey that showed the majority of responding Maine Republicans would prefer a more conservative alternative in 2012. Tom Jensen, who conducted the poll, said Snowe could be in trouble if the tea party fervor extends beyond this year.
An online reader poll conducted by the Washington Post echoed that theory, showing Snowe leading the list of senators that will be targeted by the tea party next year.
All of which has given rise to speculation about Snowes future. Some national pundits, such as Alan Colmes, a Democrat, have said Snowe will switch parties or run as an independent to win in 2012.

RESIGN you RINO whores.
That makes Juan #0.
No, it just means that the Democrats put up a token candidate and wanted Collins to keep the seat so she can give them phony "bipartisanship" cover.
The fact that Snowe and Collins are contemplating on running as independents or switching parties shows that they're not Republicans to begin with. Just more proof that liberal Republicans are worse than Democrats.
If they wanted unity, they shouldn’t have voted with the Dems so often.
I actually agree with Colmes. Snowe will either switch or run as an independent, just like that backstabber in Alaska. The rinos demand their power, but do nothing to help conservatives.
Snowe and Collins should have been thinking about party unity while they were kissing up the commies!
The kowtowing Twins need to start The New Democrat Party.
Give him a plaque thanking him for his military service.
Then give him a dunce cap inscribed with congratulations to him on being the only candidate in history for the Presidency of the United States who campaigned for and helped elect his opponent.
As a potato farmer in PA, would you good folks in Maine PLEASE get rid of this scum!!! What is wrong with you?
You want Arlen Specter or Bob Casey? I don’t know what’s worse, for God’s sakes.
Get rid of all of them.
Olympia & Jock need to enjoy the wonders of retirement. Be happy to help free up her time by never voting for her again.
What is their idea of “unity”?
Does that mean RINOs unifying support for all GOP nominees, including Tea Party candidates, or Republicans unifying around the RINO establishment?
good job tea party
How about a web commercial at least? How about a web commercial for Miller?
The Tea Partiers are unifying the party!
The fake Republicans are leaving it.
I hope Paul LePage wins the gov contest there.
I think she'll try to more to the right, look ridiculous, and get bumped off in the primary.
Fire them both!
On Nov 3rd, as winter approaches, we start SNOWE REMOVAL !.
