Snowe, Collins call for GOP unity as tea party sacks moderates (Tea Party targeting Maine RINOs)
The Boston Herald / The Sun Journal, Lewiston, Me. ^ | 2010-09-28 | Steve Mistler

Two years ago, Barack Obama and congressional Democrats rode a wave of voter disenchantment into power. Many Republicans, even in some traditional strongholds, were swept aside.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was an exception. She didn’t defeat Democrat Tom Allen. She trounced him, 61-39 percent of the vote, a landslide victory political analysts attributed to Collins’ popularity with moderates, a standing shared by her Maine colleague, U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, also a Republican.

Two years later, the same moderate image that protected Collins from the blue wave could make Snowe vulnerable to the red one advanced by the tea party. The movement has already sacked several GOP moderates, raising questions about whether voices such as Collins’ and Snowe’s still have a place in the party.

The issue was made more prominent following U.S. Rep. Mike Castle’s recent defeat in Delaware’s GOP primary for the U.S. Senate. Castle’s loss produced strong comments from Collins and Snowe, who both found the outcome troubling.

(snip)

Snowe’s reaction also came on the heels of a Public Policy Polling survey that showed the majority of responding Maine Republicans would prefer a more conservative alternative in 2012. Tom Jensen, who conducted the poll, said Snowe could be in trouble if the tea party fervor extends beyond this year.

An online reader poll conducted by the Washington Post echoed that theory, showing Snowe leading the list of senators that will be targeted by the tea party next year.

All of which has given rise to speculation about Snowe’s future. Some national pundits, such as Alan Colmes, a Democrat, have said Snowe will switch parties or run as an independent to win in 2012.

That is HER seat, and the voters have no right to steal it from her.

Let us hope that 10 or so years from now that will be the only thing left from the RINO party.

It is unlikely that Obama will do anything to rescue himself from the voters in 2012. He doesn't have it in him. Given that, voters are gonna mob the polls to vote him OUT.

Those same voters, mad at Obama, are gonna be mad at his supporters in the Senate & House, too, including Snowe.

So, I betting Snowe is history in Nov. 2012.

Snowe is up in 12

Her primary opponent will be Scott D'Amboise:

I believe what you said 100%.

Nothing ruling class elites do when their power is threatened surprises me.

This election cycle is a huge education for me.

Thanks for the heads up. I had seen his name last week and is already on my spreadsheet.

I will investigate him more before sending my hard earned cash.

I encourage it. Scott D'Amboise ran for CD2 in 06.

He ain't no RINO, and I believe he got very little support from the E-stab/insider GOPs.

I predict Snowe will survive. She'll vote to the right for the next two years and the anti-Snowe vote will be split by at least 3 candidates. In the Castle, Murkowski, Inglis (runoff) primaries the race was one-on-one so the conservative vote was unified.

In Illinois, 5 candidates split 43% of the vote against Mark Kirk; none could really get strong traction.

Hello Snow and Collins! Thank your lucky stars you aren’t up for re-election this year! Because you two would be our top targets.

Know this, we won’t be forgetting about you in the future. When your re-election comes up, you might want to consider retirement. Because you will be losing your seats.

Quite true. It’s entirely up to them...just being right of center would be an improvement.

That was just Snowe - who voted for one of the bills to get out of committee, but it didn’t go to a floor vote. Both Snowe and Collins voted to filibuster the health care bill that came to the floor. In that case having another Snowe or Collins in the Senate would have stopped the bill in its tracks...at that moment, at least, they did the right thing.

They won’t be. They’ll be replaced by rats if they get knocked out by the TP.

The TP needs to hone its strategy a bit.

The Maine TEA Party needs to play this smart. They need to decide the best way to take Snowe out. I am sure there will be many that want to run against her. United we stand, divided we fall. Should the best TEA party candidate run in the primary, or as an independent or even in the Democratic primary?

If Snowe sees a strong challenger, there is a chance she would switch parties (as she is really a Dem anyway).

Maybe the TEA party should also pick a strong challenger for the Dem primary to attract some unenrolleds to take the Dem ballot in the primary rather than a GOP ballot (to vote for Snowe over the TEA party challenger). Also if Snowe did switch she would have strong primary challenger already in place.

The Maine TEA party needs to start right after Nov 2nd to decide how to pick the strongest candidates and to get behind just one of them early. It will not be easy to defeat Snowe so we will need to play hard and smart.

Snowe did not do the right thing, The bill should never have left committee, and you know it.The RINOS allowed it out, and were bought and paid for to do it.Collins and Snowe got together to see who would be the last straw.

THEY ALLOWED A BILL OUT OF COMMITEE THAT NEITHER THE REPUBLCIAN CAUCUS NOR THE PUBLIC WERE ALLOWED TO READ!DO YOU GET THAT???????THATS LIBERAL FASCISM AND SNOWE SUPPORTED IT!!!!!

Both of them need turfing badly. OUT WITH THEM BOTH!
