HOUSTONAt midnight on the first of the month, a scene unfolds at many Wal-Mart Stores Inc. sites that underscores the deep financial strains that many low-income American consumers still face.
Parking lots come to life after 11 p.m. as customers start to stream into the stores, cramming their shopping carts full of milk, infant formula and other necessities.
Then at midnight, when the government replenishes their electronic-benefit accounts with their monthly allotments of food stamps, nutritional grants for mothers with babies or other aid for needy families, they head for the registers.
"We're not starving or anything, but we come every month at 11:55," said Tyrel Fogle, 26 years old, early Friday morning as he loaded a cart with frozen food at a Wal-Mart here on the northwestern edge of the nation's fourth largest city.

I figure that the white working class and middle class have about another 25 years for their vote to count...after that the permanant underclass will overwhelm them...and it may come sooner than that.
“If you really think about it, the only reason someone gets out there in the middle of the night and buys baby formula is that they need it, and they have been waiting for it,” Bill Simon, the head of Wal-Mart’s U.S. store business, said at a Goldman Sachs conference last month....
Um. BS. If you’re on food stamps you ought to be able to go from month to month without needing to show up just before midnight.
You’re there at midnight because you are a poor household manager and you probably don’t have to wake up for work in the morning.
Give it time Tyrel. It took a long time to free the slaves too.
Yeah, the Republic is on its last legs. Very sad, but maybe it was inevitable all along. All you have to work with is humans, faults and all. A super-duper great awakening might turn it around for awhile, but I doubt it.
Gripes me when they spend cash on booze and cigs and whip out food stamps for staples. And they load up on seafood and steak. “Gotta work da system.”
I really find this amazing. A city the size of Houston probably has hundreds of soup kitchens and food banks that could help these folks.
The undercurrent running through the story is the breakup of the family unit.
Single mother, pregnant girlfriend, mom and teen daughter with younger brother, the one married couple were young and barely making it.
I don’t begrudge them anything. I pray for them. But, when society unravels this was always going to be the result. It will only get worse unless society replaces its social fabric and the free markets return.
Part of the reason some may be absolutely DESPERATE to feed their BABIES at the end of the month...is because they TRADED their food stamp cash for actual cash.
They say, “You give me $50...I’ll go to the store and get you $80 worth of food.”
NPR has run a somewhat identical story.
Of course some of these folks buy the high end stuff (best steaks, etc.) because they'll resell the merchandise in their neighborhood for cash.
A concerned citizen called police Sept. 23 after seeing a man dumping new bottles of water on the ground near a local store with a goal of returning the bottles to get money to buy cigarettes. Officer Rick Roberts spoke with the man, who advised he had bought the water with his food stamps and was dumping the water out so he could recycle the bottles to get cigarette money.Link.
Remember all the stories about the food banks not keeping up?
Here’s what happens: They get their cards and they make deals for cash. Then they hit up the food banks, too.
“Gripes me when they spend cash on booze and cigs and whip out food stamps for staples.”
I see that all the time while I’m in the check out line...because they keep the smokes under lock and key, the cashier has to go get get them for the shopper...so everything stops while that happens.
Time was, people had to count out the stamps like money...now they can just swipe the card with no ackwardness.
You know, it will be the true unveiling of the liberal socialist agenda when the day comes that "white" actually is a minority. Of course, one does not need to be a Nostradamus to forsee that Affirmative Action, Title (put roman numeral here), etc., does not apply to white people because, well, while they might be a minority, they're not a minority because, well, well, because they're white people.
“Youre there at midnight because you are a poor household manager and you probably dont have to wake up for work in the morning.”
I have seen this midnight surge. I think it is due in part to embarrassment, as well as irregular and chaotic lifestyles.
They get too much “help” already. Many of them need to be deported (does anyone still think that only those here legally get “benefits”?)
I feed my family of five on a $400 a month grocery budget. We eat well too! I could do it for $250-300 if I had to.
I know a single mom with two children that gets $500 a month food stamps. Before the end of the month she is asking her mother for help with groceries.
When it isn’t your money you will never manage it well.
She gets $645 in food stamps, around $200 in WIC and the school age child gets free breakfast and lunch
This daughter has 4 children, 15,14, 12 and 7 ..she spends less on groceries than the food stamp allocation for the woman with the small children..she has no "free lunch" so to speak and packs the kids lunches daily
When I hear the media cry about the "starving families " I want to throw up
the customers with food stamps ate better than I did when I was working in a store back in my college days. I was eating butter sandwiches, sometimes with no butter while the “stampers” would pile on the rib and strip steaks, shrimp and whatever the sale of the week was.
At the local convenience store, there was a open market for food stamp/cash conversion, this was around 20 years ago, not sure of that can happen now.
I'm sure there are enough Churches and Christian organizations in the city to make sure that NO one, especially babies and little children, go hungry.
A lot of them it's the only time for both of them to shop together especially if they are factory workers working different shifts, and/or most of them are night owls anyway, but I've never seen the welfare class out at that time. I was also amaze at the amount of them that brought their kids along too.
It is not due to embarrassment. People these days swipe a card.
It is due to poor management...otherwise, they could show up ANY night at midnight. Instead, they show up at midnight when the card is going to be recharged.
If you really think about it, the only reason someone gets out there in the middle of the night and buys baby formula is that they need it, and they have been waiting for it, Bill Simon, the head of Wal-Marts U.S. store business, said at a Goldman Sachs conference last month....
There is a significant portion of the unemployed population that is at home, not getting up til noon, and has walmart as a midnight diversion.
“NPR has run a somewhat identical story.”
...thanks for posting that...I noticed that the NPR story features a white working class MARRIED couple...not too much of that in my area.
PS...I notice that NPR had a little tab begging for money?...they’re such leeches...they can’t make it in the free market.
Some things never change, eh? It's such a universal truth, I'm amazed that many liberals don't seem to understand it. My mother-in-law was a liberal, yet complained constantly about her daughter who didn't manage her life or money well all the while she gave her cars, computers, etc., and "loaned" her lots of money.
I can’t believe you are all complaining about these industrious folks. They aren’t sitting in there subsidized house demanding that the food be brought to them. They get up off their couches and drive to the store in the middle of the night it is usually raining or snowing. Some might think that I have diminished expectations after years of disappointments. But there is a glimmer of hope and change. Now with the new cards they can’t purchase cigarettes or beer. The must trade these food items for money and come back and pay cash.
It is too bad that these WORTHLESS PEOPLE cannot be tested for drugs, alcohol and tobacco in order to qualify for their benefits. It is even worse that none of them can be sterilized in exchange for collecting benefits.
So it's official: The Journal is just another wall in the Echo Chamber.
I looked at the picture (in the actual paper)that accompanied the article before deciding whether to invest any time in reading it.
That boy looks like he's eating OK. And whaddaya suppose those tattoos cost? How about his jewelry? Decorative sunglasses?
The article is from Houston, so I rather doubt it was either raining or snowing. As someone who’s not in Texas, and who almost exclusively shops in the evening, it’s rarely raining or snowing here at that time, either.
It’s hard for me to be glad that these people are actually going to the grocery store to get their own food.
BUT you aren’t addressing that fact that it’s not just ANY night at midnight.
It’s the night that their cards are refilled. You CAN survive on food stamps without needing to be at midnight on the night they are refilled.
If you are that desperate...you are a poor manager.
” I think it is due in part to embarrassment, as well as irregular and chaotic lifestyles.”
yep...exactly!....when my wife taught at community college, you wouldn’t believe the ‘dog ate my homework’ type excuses...only it was often true...preposterious events happen all the time in the underclass...ever notice the number of ambulance chaser lawyer commercials on daytime TV?...that’s because crazy stuff regularly occurs to folks with an erratic lifestyle.
A bit more about the shoppers:
If you are that desperate...you are a poor manager
Agreed. But for many I do not think that shopping at midnight is a hardship. I was looking at income property recently. My Good God. Lower class housing units were filled with peole who smoked, watched TV on huge screens, drank beer or stronger, and had to be woken up for a noon walkthrough.
I have walked through dozens and dozens of these units.
Pot plants in the closets, filth on the floor and fast food and packaged food everywhere. Most all looked able bodied.
Guess they are neither stupid nor ignorant (at least not to stupid to leech off the rest of us nor ignorant of how to get the handouts). That just leaves lazy.
They have been well-trained by social workers, and politicians to be entitled, and lawyers to be belligerent.
If we have such a large hunger issue, how do we also have an obesity epidemic? Should we spread the food (like spreading the wealth)?
I see these people everywhere - healthy, young, unmarried with multiple babies and multi-hued children, gold teeth, $300 sneakers, $500 tatoos, gold chains and carts full of video games and plastic junk.
Every dollar wasted on capable, functioning people like this who are living off taxpayers and government handouts because of their own foolish choices, laziness or drugs is one less dollar available to help the truly needy.
about 22 yrs ago my wife and I were on food stamps between the two of us we got $198 and we bought meat to last at least a month plus all the other staples, now days we spend about 300 or so, but have meat to last a month and 1/2 plus all the staples, and any extras we care to pick up. the greats joy I had was buying food without the stamps!! laying out a 100.00 was the best!!
I manage a convience store. They spend their food stamps (ebt) on junk, they go to the other side of the counter to pay cash for lottery scratcher tickets and cigarettes.
Pisses me off big time, how they waste my tax dollars. None are looking for work.
“But for many I do not think that shopping at midnight is a hardship.”
I guess we agree then. That’s what I am saying. There are times when people need help. But if you are shopping at midnight at Wal-Mart ... it’s because you are a poor manager.
This article wants people to feel pity. I feel annoyed.
yo, homes. wtf?
Can’t add anything to what you said :)
So true about the bizarre occurrences in the poor liberal people! I have an perpetually poor in-law; they have some of the most peculiar things happen. It appears to be a lack of forethought, and general common sense. It may be, too, that such events help them get the sympathy/support they think they require, so there’s no reason to avoid them.
just imagine shopping at any time when free enterprise legislated out of business.
I am sure you were on food stamps to get you through a rough patch. That is what the program should be for. Not the ones that feel entitled to it.
Many folk don’t realize what’s out there in terms of help. Also, some folk have some pride and don’t want a handout unless it’s truly dire.
I know my parents were like that back in the day.
Those are the kind of people that it is truly a pleasure to help. They are the ones that will volunteer in the soup kitchen and help finance the soup kitchen when they get back on their feet.
