IIRC, there was a story about an American who renounced his country and was perpetually remanded to different warships off-shore as a punishment - never to see his homeland again....

I read that as an impressionable youth in an old book at my grandmother’s house in the 70s. I had to be under 10 at the time.
It stuck with my ever since, and I think it gave me a base for my patriotism.
