WASHINGTON Solar power is coming to President Barack Obama's house.
The most famous residence in America, which has already boosted its green credentials by planting a garden, plans to install solar panels atop the White House's living quarters. The solar panels are to be installed by spring 2011, and will heat water for the first family and supply some electricity.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the plans Tuesday in Washington at a conference of local, state, academic and nonprofit leaders aimed at identifying how the federal government can improve its environmental performance.

“...already boosted its green credentials by planting a garden,...”
Folks, you just can’t write this stuff to make them any more stupid.
From the article:
Based on available roof space, administration officials expect the photovoltaic system will include between 25 to 75 panels and will convert sunlight into 19,700 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. That would save a typical household $2,300 on its electricity bill, based on commercial rates in Washington. The solar hot water heating system, based on government estimates, could save an additional $1,000 a year.
Kennedy estimates that outfitting Obama's pad with solar would cost about $100,000 if paid out of pocket. But the money would be earned back with savings on the electric bill in the first five years
Only in dirty green hippie fantasy land is $3,300 x 5 equal to $100,000.
Jimmuh Carter 2.0. Obama just needs a beer-swilling brother and a confession about lusting in his heart.
Keep that useless crap off of our Whitehouse.
Just in time for winter, the Obozo Admin will have the WH go solar? What a maroon!!!!!
Man, the reporter didn’t even stop to do some basic math with a pencil and some paper.
Methinks that Obozo’s brother would more likely be a spear throwing Kenyan!!!
Idiots. That roof needs to be clear for secret service.
So the next Republican president in 2012 will just have to rip this white elephant all out...LOL!
“Solar power is coming to President Barack Obama’s house.”
He can put them on HIS house in Chicago if he wants, but that house in DC belongs to the people.
$100K????? You should be able to supply all the electricity for the WH with a system like that. I can take care of my house for $30K. But I won’t live long enough to pay it back, so I’m not doing it. Even if the government pays for 50% of it, where’s the savings? Someone has to pay for it, one way or another.
I cut the quote so that we didn’t excerpt too much. Basically, that quote’s attributed to the green loon who, by the way was in the Maldives working putting solar panels on their President’s private residence. Not the reporter.
But it goes to show what snakes these GLO-BULL warming salespeople are.
Barney Frank the banking queen does their math no doubt....:o)
It’s NOT Obama’s house. It belongs to THE PEOPLE. The sooner we evict the current dead beat squatters the better.
Desperate to maintain some semblence of relevance, our president resorts to meaningless gestures and vacuous symbolism. He’s a shallow, vacant human being that has barely enough insight to recognize his own inadequacy.
Hmmm. Obozo’s minions fudged the figures by a factor of 6 - surprise surprise.
Ah, Barbi Benton. Can't fault Carter on that one.
I put over 50k of panels on my house. Won’t pay for itself before they wear out and need total replacement.
We don't have an election in a month or something? /sarcasm
That reminds me. "Plugs" Biden's home state has numerous SP mfgs...
Why not a small nuclear power plant? That would make more strategic sense.
Notice how they do this at taxpayers expense. If he does this at his own chicago mansion, I’ll believe him.
YEAH hip hip hooray!!!!!!!!!
We are buying Obama a PR opportunity - and AP and all the media lackeys lap it up! Complete with voodoo math!!!!!
Bush had solar on WH 8 years ago. Media = chirp chirp. Obummer does it - Chu holds a press conference.
Compare Bush’s real home with Obummers. If interested in green tech - Bush crushes all lefties (with exception of those who don’t shower).
And it wil lpay for itself in five years!!!! Brought to you by “we won’t raise taxes” and “you cna keep your old health care plan!”.
What sun? Nothing but dark clouds over the WH since obama moved in
I don’t understand the widespread opposition to solar around here. If it can power your calculator, it can power your car. /
Hummm... I wonder if this can be defunded between Jan and the installation date?
$100,000 divided by 19700kw-hr = $5/kwhr. Divided over the average lifespan of solar panels (20-25years) is $0.20 -$0.25/kwhr. Assuming the 19700kwhr/year takes into account cloudy days, dirt/grime on the panels, degredation over time of the photocells themselves.
For comparison, including all my taxes and fees, I pay $0.16/kwhr total for over-the-wire electricity.
$2,300 annual savings (for 20 years, till the panels need replacement).
If they took the $100,000 and put it into the bank, it would earn $2,300 annually in interest and then some. Plus, at the end of 20 years (when the solar panels need replacing) you would still have the $100,000 in the bank.
Ah, the huckster selling this junk can’t perform basic math. That’s even worse.
$100,000/3300$/yr = 30.3yr
Epic Math Fail
The cost benefit analysis is even worse than the installation cost and energy savings indicates. Solar panels deteriorate over time, perhaps 1 percent per year. Invertors also need replacement. The cost benefit analysis should factor into the declining energy production and the cost to replace invertors about every 10 years.
In defense of this installation however is the cost of electricity. If the Democrats can artificially inflate electricity costs high enough (10 times), these panels are a great investment.
Really! How stupid is that!
Spend, spend, spend...that’s all these people know how to do!
It gets even better.. he uses a pie in the sky 5,000 foot, 60,000 KW California house in his example, when Zero’s just putting in a system that will generate 1/3 of that in a city that has way more cloudy days than LA.
You have to love token liberalism. As 1forall points out, this system never pays for itself compared to the alternative. It doesn’t take care of the electricity needs of the White House or even the entire living quarters..
Typical liberal epic fail. But the greenies will all be happy.
“Who used all the hot water?”
I really boosted my credential,I planted a garden, and I also hang my laundry on the line to dry always.. I wonder if Mrs. Barack Hussein Obama Jr. would start doing that...
I sure hope the war room has it’s own generator installed. We would have to create a law that prohibits national emergencies on cloudy days. However, since man controls the climate, that should not present a problem.
Why does the White House need solar panels? I thought the light just emanated from Obama naturally.
Ding ding ding!
“...Solar power is coming to President Barack Obama’s house...”
First of all, it ISN’T Ø’s house. It is OUR house. He is just the current usurping resident of it. Got it, Dina.
In Arizona, we had solar (NEVER AGAIN!)
When I took a bath, I could draw 4 inches of hot water before it ran out. Hated that!
“Only in dirty green hippie fantasy land is $3,300 x 5 equal to $100,000.”
And in Washington, where money bled from hardworking taxpayers isn’t even considered money - it’s just a government perk.
Were you kidding - or do you not understand solar?
