WASHINGTON — Solar power is coming to President Barack Obama's house.

The most famous residence in America, which has already boosted its green credentials by planting a garden, plans to install solar panels atop the White House's living quarters. The solar panels are to be installed by spring 2011, and will heat water for the first family and supply some electricity.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the plans Tuesday in Washington at a conference of local, state, academic and nonprofit leaders aimed at identifying how the federal government can improve its environmental performance.

I really boosted my credential,I planted a garden, and I also hang my laundry on the line to dry always.. I wonder if Mrs. Barack Hussein Obama Jr. would start doing that...

I sure hope the war room has it’s own generator installed. We would have to create a law that prohibits national emergencies on cloudy days. However, since man controls the climate, that should not present a problem.

Why does the White House need solar panels? I thought the light just emanated from Obama naturally.

“...Solar power is coming to President Barack Obama’s house...”

First of all, it ISN’T Ø’s house. It is OUR house. He is just the current usurping resident of it. Got it, Dina.

"“Who used all the hot water?”

Exactly!

In Arizona, we had solar (NEVER AGAIN!)

When I took a bath, I could draw 4 inches of hot water before it ran out. Hated that!

ALL for show.

There is not enough room on the roof to be anything OTHER than "show". The Secret Service needs a large portion of the roof to protect the President - plus - there is always the need for space for the usual necessities such as vents, air conditioners etc.

. I seriously doubt that 20 - 25% of the roof could be used for solar collectors.

“Only in dirty green hippie fantasy land is $3,300 x 5 equal to $100,000.”

And in Washington, where money bled from hardworking taxpayers isn’t even considered money - it’s just a government perk.

I wonder what company Obama is going to hire to put these solar panels on his roof. I am sure it will be friend that he funnels the money to.

What I want to know is what is the total annual White House energy bill? If we knew that, we can judge this project, because there is a “total energy” alternative that could provide 100% of the White House energy needs, provide 100% security for that energy and essentially take the White House “off the grid”.

No way is the White House paying only $2300 a year in electric bills, its complete gibberish. In 2000, I remember something about the Navy paying for Cheney’s electric Bill at around $186,000 a year. The WH must necessarily be more! These are not just houses but command centers for the President and VP. This is obviously a gimmick by Zero to please the “green” yuppies but the numbers still don’t add up. A $100,000/year bill for the White House makes way more sense. I understand the POTUS is an idiot, but I am still surprised how we easily accept any piece of information without criticism just because it is anti-Zero. I’d rather be legit in my critiques....

Unrelated to the topic, but keeping $100,000 at the end of 20 years actually means that you Lose money because of Inflation. Interest in the bank usually trails the annual rate of interest so in general, putting your money in banks either keeps it or reduces it a little, irrespective of what the actual amount is. The “interest earned from a bank” argument is a red herring. As long as you don’t use ‘arguments” like these with the liberals...

Did you even read the article? Stop coming up with Bad critiques! Its disingenuous to keep calling out the liberals for idiots that they in fact are, but act the Same! We. Are. Better. So act like it! The article says :

“That would save a typical household $2,300 on its electricity bill....”

and then
“But the White House is far from a typical house...”
Can I say, No s**t Sherlock? As I noted before, if the WH’s annual electricity Bill is anything less than $100,000, I would be absolutely stunned...Solar power is way too expensive for an Average house, but for the WH, who knows? Maybe, it does bring down the electric bill or maybe (more likely) it doesn’t but we need to know the actual numbers before we sound off. Good arguments are a habit you know...

Well -
We don’t need to know the exact numbers - for two reasons -

1. Many of us have run the calculations. You see the results in these posts. Solar don’t pay - even with good sun, in high electric cost areas, with 65% government subsidy. On large installations.

Whether the WH uses $2K or $4K or $100K per year makes no difference - it is the cost/KWHr that drives the equation.

Anotehr way to tell? See all of those provate business NOT putting up soalr? If it paid - even with the subsidies that the WH can’t get - more places would have solar.

majority of solar are government buildings - or CA - where they made a mistake with the kickback, and give rebates too large.
