Life in Prison for Would-Be Times Square Bomber
nytimes ^

Posted on 10/05/2010 12:29:15 PM PDT by traumer

Faisal Shahzad, who pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a sport utility vehicle carrying a homemade bomb in May in Times Square, thick with Saturday visitors, was sentenced on Tuesday morning to spend the rest of his life in prison. Remaining defiant, and smirking as the sentence was read, he told the court: “Brace yourselves, because the war with Muslims has just begun.”

He later continued: “The defeat of the U.S. is imminent and will happen in the near future.”

Mr. Shahzad, 30, was sentenced by Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum in Federal District Court in Manhattan. As those filling the courtroom listened, she told Mr. Shahzad, “You are a young man, and you will have a lot of time to reflect about what you have said today, and what you have done.”

The outcome of the hearing was a foregone conclusion, since Mr. Shahzad’s no-deals guilty plea June 21, in which he spoke at length about his training with the Pakistani Taliban and his desire that day to “plead guilty 100 times over.”

Mr. Shahzad’s vehicle, loaded with explosives as ill equipped to detonate as they were powerful, was found in Times Square on May 1, and he was arrested two days later aboard an airplane about to leave for Dubai. He immediately began cooperating with the authorities. Investigators later exploded a similar vehicle with an operational bomb inside, and estimated that the blast could have killed dozens.

Great.

Now we taxpayers have to support this maggot until he dies.

A 5.56mm round between the running lights would have been a lot cheaper and I would volunteer to deliver it, myself.

He’s not a “would be” bomber, save that moniker for the jihadists who thought they were detonating a bomb but really handed a dummy remote by FBI agents.

This is a bomb plot but he was still had deadly intent. He was THWARTED after it had been planted.

Faisal Shahzad gets life in prison for a single bomb that failed.

Bill Ayres' multiple bombs did work and he got a professorship at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I's a strange world we live in.

So we have to support this scumbag for the rest of his life, listen to his ramblings and subject people to the threat of some other kook retaliating. Just take him outside and shoot him, send him on his way to his 72 virgins.

Thanks, Sappy.

We're supposed to forget about Ayers bombings because they occurred back when he was young and stupid.

And the people who tell us that are the same people who tell us Christine O'Donnell is unfit for congress because she "dabbled in witchcraft" back when she was young and stupid.

It is a strange world indeed.

Moderate Muslims don’t lie.

Like all prisoners of war during war time, he should be sent to a POW prison camp - GITMO - for the duration of the war; and if the terrorists insist on that being “for eternity”, so be it, that’s not our fault.

Sorry but he is not nor should he be accorded the protections given to a POW. This scumbag is a common criminal, tried and convicted as such and should do hard time in a Federal prison, not live it up at GITMO.

Only the best for our boy!

“Most cells’ furniture is made almost entirely out of poured concrete, including the desk, stool, and bed. Each chamber contains a toilet that shuts off if plugged, a shower that runs on a timer to prevent flooding, and a sink missing a potentially dangerous trap. Rooms may also be fitted with polished steel mirrors bolted to the wall, an electric light, a radio, and a television that shows recreational, educational and religious programming.[12] These are considered privileges that may be taken away as punishment, so they are placed and remotely controlled such that the inmate does not actually come into contact with them. The 4 in (10 cm) by 4 ft (1.2 m) windows are designed to prevent the prisoner from knowing his specific location within the complex because he can see only the sky and roof through them. Additionally, inmates exercise in what has been described as an “empty swimming pool,” so they do not know their location for possible escape.[13] Telecommunication with the outside world is forbidden, and food is hand-delivered by correctional officers. The prison as a whole contains a multitude of motion detectors and cameras, 1,400 remote-controlled steel doors, and 12 ft (3.66 m) high razor wire fences. Laser beams, pressure pads, and attack dogs guard the area between the prison walls and razor wire.

Eric Rudolph, the Olympic Park bomber, lamented in a series of 2006 letters to a Colorado Springs newspaper that the ADX is meant to “inflict misery and pain.”[14] Charles Harrelson, who was sent to ADX after a failed attempt to escape from a Georgia prison, said “Part of the plan here is sensory deprivation,” and “It could be infinitely worse.”[13] A former ADX warden described the place as “a cleaner version of Hell.”[15] There have been hundreds of “involuntary feedings” and four suicides.[15] Most recently, in June 2009 Richard Reid, commonly known as the “shoe bomber”, went on a hunger strike and was force-fed.”

“Sorry but he is not nor should he be accorded the protections given to a POW. This scumbag is a common criminal”

There is nothing “common” about it. Making war in the manner of an enemy combatant is not a “common crime” that fits the purposes of civil courts. It is civil courts, and their protections of the accused that are “too good for him. He should have been turned over to a military tribunal and sentence imposed there.

Just a little reminder about what Mayor Bloomberg had to say about this guy. and I'll bet he's not even embarrassed.

May 4, 2010, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg:

“Home-grown, maybe a mentally deranged person or somebody with a political agenda that doesn't like the health care bill or something. It could be anything.”

Yeah, Mikey, he was just a disgruntled citizen who didn't like the health care bill or something. Speaking of "citizen", how do you feel about his comments today at his sentencing? "I did swear, but I did not mean it."

I'm just wondering if Bloomberg was enlightened in any way by that statement. Nah, he'll still continue to pave the way for the Ground Zero mosque. Feisal Abdul Rauf and his wife Daisy Kahn claim to "love this country". Still believe that, Moronic Mayor?
