KABUL, Afghanistan – Taliban officials have engaged in periodic, discreet contacts with Afghan and U.S. officials for months but are unwilling to move to formal peace negotiations until the U.S. agrees to a timetable for the withdrawal of all foreign troops, according to a Pakistani intelligence official and members of a newly formed Afghan peace council.
The White House said Wednesday that President Barack Obama supports attempts by the Afghan government to open peace talks with Taliban leaders, but still wants the insurgents to renounce violence and their support of al-Qaida.
However, press secretary Robert Gibbs said the United States was not taking part in any such talks. "This is about Afghanistan," he said. "It has to be done by the Afghans."

Translation: We will talk but you must agree to surrender first. History lesson: Remember the Vietnam “peace talks” that dragged on until we bombed the s*** out of them at Christmas 1972? Then we left, just like the Taliban wants, and they won. This offer to talk is a sign of weakness and we need to hit them hard to finish this war. But will Obama do that? Not a chance.
Me wonders if Mr. Skittles sees any parallels between himself and Nixon?

If you act like you’ve just got to have a settlement, you’re going to pay dearly for it.
The way to get a real peace settlement is to act like you are prepared to stay forever, that your enemies are going die young on the battlefield or die old hiding in their caves but they are never going to be safe, they are never going to come home, they are never going to win, and you are in no hurry to go anywhere. You can keep this up til the cows come home, no problem.
For starters, we need Mullah Omar’s head on a platter.

No, the Taliban are winning. Losers ask to negotiate and “our side” asked to talk. The Taliban’s “willingness to negotiate” is an attempt to see what they can get without fighting for it (like Vietnam, like Israel-PA.) But even an agreement will not stop the fighting for the rest.
Oh, and the Taliban is almost in control, through ISI, of former “ally” Pakistan and 100 nukes.
