So, with Dubya making a “comeback” if you will, does Jeb get a reprieve from having the wrong last name?

Well, I didn’t say that. Let’s not put words in people’s mouths.

Bush gave us such gems as Hank Paulson, and demanded that the GOP bail out both GM and Chrysler.
You know the litany . . No Child Left Behind, etc.

I sure wish he would go back into hiding for 4 more weeks. Does he need the money that bad that he has to promote his book now? And I guarantee you that he didn’t write it himself.

“Of course the LEFTIST elites shun him, but he didn’t do much to disempower them by shrinking the size of the bureaucracy.”

If he had done that, he would have been even more heroic - probably in the Reagan mold. But he is honorable, and certainly compared to any RAT politician.

“but I never worried that he was anti-American.”

Right!

The claim is effectively untrue.

The federal government grew much more under Reagan. I don’t really blame Reagan but I certainly don’t blame Bush.

As I noted earllier in one of his allegedly biggest indiscretions, Bush actually required that government money be paid back with interest.

That has almost no precedent in govt spending history. That was over $300 billion.

Frankly, I don't think it's good for the country to have a former president criticize his successor," Bush said.

Classy thought... I'm too young, but I would think Reagan would not trash Carter either every time he opened his mouth in early 1980s...

"...he talks about “the Elites” as if he weren’t one of them..."

He came from wealth and influence, but he never told us how to live our lives. That's elitism.

Excellent point and worth the distinction with a huge difference.

Thanks for that; good for a quote when Chris Matthews tinkles down his leg reading GW's book.

I fault him and his dad for that. That is one thing I liked about Reagan, he didn’t try to be friends with the democrats on their terms. It was his way or the highway !

> IMHO, his biggest fault was “reaching across the isle.” Every time he did, he came back with a bloody stup at the end of his arm.

Amen brother, I saw it the same way. I think people get contextually lost being in the moment, whereas history has a great way of making the context become the focal point of the decision, besides we can now judge Bush on his most recent predecessor and as we see that contest is quickly becoming a victory for W.... History will be kind and serve George W. Bush well.

...there’s definitely a difference between “elite” and “elitist”.

An excellent observation, and well worth repeating - especially in light of the man we're discussing.

FWIW, I have to say I didn’t always agree with him, including on Iraq, but I respect the hell out of the man.

I don’t have enough respect for Obama or Biden to say I “disagree.”

Obama politically upended the normal bankruptcy procedures, but he could do it because W bailed them out with TARP funds before he left office. They burned through the cash quickly, but the fact they had bailout funds gave Obama the pretext he wanted for interfering. If Bush had left them to fend for themselves, they would have been declared bankruptcy before he left office and things would have proceeded in a purely legal manner before Obama and his cronies could save their union allies assets.

President Reagan did NOT reduce the size of government; in fact, he grew it — research is our friend. [BTW: NEITHER President Reagan nor President Bush is an elitist.]

FYI: The Heritage Foundation recently recanted its criticism of President Bush’s Medicare provision, admitting that the program has been a success by virtually every measure. Again, research is our friend.

I guarantee you that he didn’t write it himself.

Do you mean that he had an editor help him, or do you mean that he had a ghost writer and didn't pen any of it himself?

My guess is he had regular meetings with the writer who writes down Bush’s experiences and thoughts. The writer than takes those verbal transcripts and produces a book.

Bush of course read the book and makes suggestions or comments.

I can’t think of a book I am less interested in reading. Maybe in 10 years, when GWB figures out how badly he governed. He tried to make the Middle East Muslims into a Jeffersonian democracy. That says it all.
