Trapped Chilean Miners Rescue Beginning. Live Coverage
(Excerpt) Read more at guardian.co.uk ...
"Capsule will do one dry run empty. Then a rescuer will go down and come up again. Then we'll get cracking hopefully
Thanks for the ping, my FRiend.
I haven’t posted in what seems like forever. Many, many family health issues keep me occupied with other more important responsibilities.
For many reasons I have a good feeling about this rescue of these tough, brave and strong-willed men.
Two of those reasons are American ingenuity and American workers. One, the bits used for drilling were made in good old Salem, VA, home of Morgan Griffith, who is the Republican running against democrat Rich Boucher in the hotly contested 9th congrssional district, and my home, as well. Second, the drill operator is from America, and he knows “the feel” of the drill making its way down the hard rock.
Seriously though, my God be with all the rescuers, the families of these miners and most of all, the miners themselves.
I surely hope the Chilean government and press never release the names of the miners. If so, they will be hounded for interviews and most likely book and movie deals. If their names are released I would hope they ask for as much money as possible for book and movie rights. Quite simply, they have earned the rights to all the money they can get.
Guy on CNN said they would load in some sandbags to simulate the weight of a man for a test run.
The cable attachment has to be internal so that in case it is trapped by a rock GOING UP the internal catchment can be released allowing the capsule to return to the bottom ~ otherwise it’d just be stuck in the tunnel and they’d need to drill another one.
It depends on their mood. Sometimes they just laugh and laugh...
Through a very long period of "selection" these miners don't suffer from claustrophobia.
That would make more sense. Why risk another life, thanks
Oh goodness, I hope I never have a tech like that!!!
Glad to see you on, my FRiend. I have not followed the story very closely; but, this evening I think I heard that the drill was made in PA, not VA. Perhaps part one place and part in another?
Boucher needs to GO! Needs to have that smirk wiped right off his moon face. Maybe I need to cross the state line and do some groundwork for Morgan.
Hey there tet; hope you are well.
I think the drill was built in PA, but the bits were made in Salem. The ultra liberal rag Roanoke Times had a story about the company a few weeks ago.
Well, the capsule has been bought back up and they are banging on it with a hammer again.
something is wrong with the door, they are banging on it with a hammer, must have got bent on the way down on the test run
Why are they banging the capsule with a hammer? Is it because it gets dented on the journey down and up.
Anyone know the temperature?
I apologize is someone has asked and this has been answered already. I was watching live on BOR’s show and Alan Colmes was on.
Has Alan Colmes had a facelift or Botox? eee gads!
“Why are they banging the capsule with a hammer?”
Because banging on it with a loaf of bread wouldn’t accomplish anything?
“Anyone know the temperature?”
Someone said that it is in the mid 40s topside.
“The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, gang aft agley.”
Appears to be low to mid 40's according to Weather.com
LOL~ Chemical peel or something
My 8 year old is watching this and wants to know why they just didn’t build a long ladder down the hole instead of this capsule.
“Because banging on it with a loaf of bread wouldnt accomplish anything?”
I suppose you could be right.
Is ‘Larry King Live’ the name of his show, or a confirmation of his medical status?
LMAO~ David Spade could use some new material, L~
Sorry, just tuning in... Has anyone thought of what to do when these guys get the bends? Anyone know where the nearest decompression chamber is? Have they talked about this at all? Thanks...
I’m split screen on the laptop....the link to the live scene and the freeper thread............and Fox.....Shep flat out suckkkkkkkkkksssssssssssssss
The best laid schemes o Mice an Men, gang aft agley.
Yeah, I realize not everything and everyone are perfect.
something is wrong with the door, it was damaged on the way down on the test run
I hadn’t seen him in at least a year. That was scary. I had to wait until I heard BOR say “Alan” before I knew for sure.
Don’t want that sucker rubbing on the sides...
“Shep flat out suckkkkkkkkkksssssssssssssss”
The absolutely worst people to give commentary on events such as these are Shep and Sean.
“Dont want that sucker rubbing on the sides...”
Not gonna touch that one.
Where’s Brit when you need him...
No different than going on a rapid ski lift. There is no water involved so no problem.
Thanks, I wasn’t watching when an explanation was reported.
There was a report that they've all agreed that they're going to share any money that comes their way. They're hoping that they make enough that none of them ever has to work in the mines again.
Another report is that there were tensions between the main group and a group of five miners who were considered their inferiors because they were contract laborers. That group actually set up a separate camp some distance from the others. And one of the wives said that the men have all agreed never to talk about what happened during the first 17 days, between the cave in and the first drill breaking through to them. Apparently bad stuff went down.
Where’s Stan Chambers now that we need him?
Well, Brit would be much better than Shep and Sean, but having a survivor from Quecreek might have a better understanding of the situation and could comment with much more authority.
then second it posted, I was laughin way out loud
My thought was just the barometric pressure change due to altitude difference.... fleeting navy doc thought. Thanks.
ditto and ditto..........
“Wheres Stan Chambers now that we need him?”
I don’t know too much about him other than he was a celebrated reporter somewhere in CA.
“Has anyone thought of what to do when these guys get the bends?”
As others have said, there is no worry of that since there is no water involved, so the pressure difference is the same as just gaining altitude, like going up a skyscraper or a ski lift.
However, an interesting thought experiment: If there WAS that kind of pressure down below, they could just have the miners walk under the pipe/hole one by one and they would just shoot right up and out of the pipe like a big spitball from a straw!
I think the biggest “adaptability” issue they are going to face is getting used to daylight again after being in comparatively dim lighting for over two months. I also wonder what it did to their circadian rhythm?
I’ve been watching the live feed and I just know there
are miners across the country pounding on their TVs
and yelling, “What the f*** are you doing???”.
Why didn’t they line the pit head up with the shaft?
They have to use a snatch block and a strap to center it???
Does the pod keep getting stuck?
They lower it, raise it, then wail on it with a sledgehammer.
