CHICAGO (WLS) - The U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether the state of Illinois missed the deadline for mailing absentee ballots to members of the military and other overseas American voters as part of a new federal overseas voting law.
Cris Cray, Director of Legislation at the Illinois State Board of Elections, says not all of Illinois' 110 jurisdictions were compliant with the 2009 Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (MOVE).
The law requires every state to mail their absentee ballots 45 days prior to Election Day to overseas troops, government employees and other Americans who want to vote from abroad.
Cray says she is currently compiling data from each of Illinois' jurisdictions to determine which were compliant and which were delinquent. Cray said it's possible the ballots may not be counted because the state was tardy in sending them out.
Illinois was required to have all of its absentee ballots mailed by Sept. 18, the national deadline. Election officials have until Nov. 15 to count the absentee ballots, which must be postmarked by midnight Nov. 1 to be eligible.
In an e-mail response, Justice Department spokeswoman Xochil Hinojosa confirmed that Illinois is being investigated for the absentee ballot infraction.
"The Department is working with all states, including Illinois, to investigate and remedy and problems that will prevent our men and women serving overseas from having the opportunity to vote and have their votes counted," Hinojosa said
The Justice Department has brought a lawsuit against the state of New York after settling with New Mexico over a similar case of delinquent absentee ballots for overseas Americans.
Several New York counties including the five boroughs of New York City were found to be in violation of the deadline after the state was permitted by the Defense Department to move its deadline to Oct. 1 because the state's primary day was four days before the deadline.
The Justice Department settled a case with New Mexico Tuesday where six counties failed to mail ballots by the deadline.
Overseas ballots could be a deciding factor in Illinois' mid-term elections where recent polls show a tight U.S. Senate race between Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Alexi Giannoulias. Republican Bill Brady has an edge over Democratic incumbent Pat Quinn for governor.
First New York, now Chicago. Two Democrat strongholds.
Surprise me not.
This is no accident
Lots of people need to go to jail, starting with the Secretaries of State.
Illinois people-start calling your SOS and State Attorney General and DEMAND that the election doesn’t end until all votes are counted!
Maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to call their votes until the military have theirs in.
We need to amend the law to state that any service member that doesn’t receive a ballot or receives a ballot postmarked inside the 45 day window, doesn’t have to pay state taxes of any kind. That should solve this issue.
The largest voter fraud conspiracy in U.S. history is taking shape. The DOJ will go through the motions of an investigation but find no wrong-doing. Wait until the mail-in ballots are counted-this will turn into a Democrat landslide. Online registration is a joke and we won’t know how many millions of fraudulent registrations have been done until after the election.
To quote Plugs Biden....Now that IS a big F’n deal!!!
Seems soros’ “purchase” of the secretaries of state HAS WORKED!!
I guess all whores have a price....
Jail time. Let the investigations begin. Impeachable offense.
Oh H(*& no. Illinois is the most corrupt state in the union.
How about the DoD puts the soldiers on a transport, brings them back to vote, and bills the whole thing to the state(s) who blew the deadline.
Every election official that is in any way involved in denying our troops the right to vote IS A TRAITOR and should be punished accordingly.
FTA: The Justice Department settled a case with New Mexico Tuesday where six counties failed to mail ballots by the deadline.
It's already happening...
I voted today in Illinois thanks to the Early Voting process. EVERYONE in Illinois who is reading this should take advantage - there is no reason to hold off and then have something come up and cause you to miss your chance to vote! Be part of the Tsunami!
e-mail the bastards, too...let THEM know WE know.
“DEMAND that the election doesnt end until all votes are counted!”
That’s my thinking too. Just set a new deadline for the military ballots; and if the elections are close, the results are put on hold until the military deadline comes and the votes are counted.
That man needs a very long pause in his breathing cycle.
Watch for OTHER states to do this despicable thing:
States ignoring the MOVE ACT—
Connecticut, New Mexico (I think they’ve already done it), Alabama, Arkansas, California, Indiana, Nevada.
Go to NASS.org, find the secretary of state in these states, and DARE them to do the same thing Illinois and New York have done.
