2 City Democrats Endorse Cao (New Orleans Congressioal race)

Two New Orleans city officials have crossed party lines to endorse Republican U.S. Rep. Joseph Cao.

District B City Councilwoman Stacy Head and Assessor Erroll Williams have thrown their support behind Cao, despite being Democrats.

Cao faces Democrat State Rep. Cedric Richmond in the Nov. 2 election for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

Head said Cao has gotten a lot done during his two years in Washington, like cutting through FEMA red tape. And she said she believes he has his constituents' best interests at heart.

"While I don't agree with all of his decisions, with all of this votes, he's a man of integrity, of honor," Head said. "And he really spends the time to read every single bill that he has to vote on. These are not politically-motivated decisions that he makes. They are decisions that he makes after careful consideration, after study and he makes them for his district."

This is excellent news, though Cao has cast some bad votes. Everyone thought he was a goner, but he may hang on.

Actually, Cao voted against Cap-and-Trade. The GOP’ers who voter Aye on that one were:

Bono-Mack
Castle
Kirk
Lance
LoBiondo
McHugh
Reichert
Smith (NJ)

That’s kind of my thought, too. Cao may only have an ACU rating of 55, but this is a district that is 2/3’s African-American and was last held by a Republican in 1891. We could elect far more conservative candidates in Alaska or South Carolina. But realistically, 55 is probably about as conservative as it’s going to get in the LA-2nd District.

As another FReeper pointed out to me, imagine if we had a ‘55’ Republican in seats currently held by ultra-lefties. I’d take a 55 over Pete Stark or Bernie Sanders any day!

Actually, Cao voted against Cap-and-Trade.

You are right, I stand corrected; but worse than that, Cao, was the only one of the 177 House Republicans to support the health-care bill.

Joseph Cao got more good news. Another Democrat official has crossed party lines to endorse him.

I hope that there are plenty more to follow.

But do you know the circumstances? Cao was the very last Representative to vote. Boehner held him until the last because a.) if his vote was needed to defeat the measure, he was going to vote "No" or b.) if his vote was irrelevant to the measure's success, Cao would be allowed to vote "Yes" -- reflecting the wishes of his dirt-poor, mostly black district.

As it happened, the measure passed by two votes. Cao's vote made no difference -- so he was allowed to vote "Aye".

But the important thing to remember is that, if his vote had been needed, he would've been there.

You will never, and I mean never get a more conservative representative in that district. Cao is doing well considering. His 55 acu rating is far superior to the 2 acu rating you’d get outta anyone else from there.

Cao is a goner. Not a chance he gets re-elected.

The rat is the favorite obviously but I think he has a realistic shot. We never get districts like this. It's worth fighting to hold on to it.

I was ready to chuck him when he voted for initially Obamacare (he voted against it the second time).

I don't support most Republicans in Cao's voting record territory however this is a rat bastion. If you can get a half Republican in rat bastion house seat that's a huge improvement. He's good on some things.

Some in New Orleans think that Cao has some momentum going for him.
