White House press secretary Robert Gibbs responds to an inquiry that Michelle Obama was campaigning inside a polling place while she was early voting.

"She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband’s agenda going," a man claimed First Lady Michelle Obama told him inside a polling place.

"She's a remarkable campaigner," Gibbs said.

Since Michelle was there simply as a voter, and not a poll watcher, poll officer, or political party officer or candidate, she was probably quite free to say whatever she wished ~ just like I do when we are standing there as a family with our friends, in line, going in to vote a straight Republican ticket.

We have to verify things to make sure no one is tricked by the Democrats.

Too many people forget that she's not just a giant levitating Wookie, she's also a voter ~ and as I always say, as I'm sure she does as well, VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN!

FIRST LADY CAMPAIGNED INSIDE POLLING PLACE
Thu Oct 14 2010 16:19:25 ET

First lady Michelle Obama appears to have violated Illinois law — when she engaged in political discussion at a polling place!

The drama began after Mrs. Obama stopped off at the Martin Luther King Center on the south side of Chicago to cast an early vote.

After finishing at the machine, Obama went back to the desk and handed in her voting key.

She let voters including electrician Dennis Campbell, 56, take some photos.

“She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband’s agenda going,” Campbell said.

According to the pool reporter at the scene, the conversation took place IN the voting center not far from the booths.

Illinois state law — Sec. 17-29 (a) — states: “No judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person shall, at any primary or election, do any electioneering or soliciting of votes or engage in any political discussion within any polling place, within 100 feet of any polling place.”

WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS ELECTIONEERING

When questioned about the brazen nature of Mrs. Obama’s campaigning, press secretary Robert Gibbs defended the action.

“I don’t think it would be much to imagine, the First Lady might support her husband’s agenda,” Gibbs smiled.

Developing...

“Since Michelle was there simply as a voter...”

You are incorrect. No one is allowed to campaign within a certain number of feet from the poll, and certainly not while inside the poll location.

However, like others have pointed out, she is the First Lady and she will be given a pass on this.

It’s really not that big a deal. Sure it could be ‘technically’ improper, and a law suit could be filed.

More B.S., and more lawyers making more money and would it help?

No. So Michelle appealed to one voter. My God, she is the President’s Wife. It’s not like her bias is any secret.

The real issue is, what is Barry up to, while the media has us focused on an issue which will produce a mild reaction among the general public.

What are the status of election officials, the illegal voters, the dead voters, the mail in voters, the military voters.

The States reported a huge amount of voters that were dead or illegal, yet still voted, still were on the ‘roles’.

Any chance they will ever remove them?

I know the same law with virtually the same language in Virginia means I, as a private citizen, can wait in line at the polls and talk stuff with my friends also waiting inline.

A party official can't.

The law referred to: "..... judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person....", and you are jumping to conclusions that "other person" means "voter".

No, it doesn't say "voter". It ways "other person", and that's where the courts have latitude, so what you need to do is to find out what Illinois own suppreme court says that means in the context of that law.

After all, if it means "all persons" then a son helping his elderly mother could be EXCLUDED from the polls, along with his mother, and they would be prevented from voting.

You'd then take them out and punish them for whatever it was they said.

I see a number of infringements of fundamental rights in any interpretation that says you can't talk about anything, certainly not a politician, at the polls.

BTW, the giant levitating Wookey's husband IS NOT A CANDIDATE for any of the offices on the ballot this time, so where was her "electioneering"?

From the Drudgereport article: "A top Ilinois State Board of Elections official tells the DRUDGE REPORT that Mrs. Obama -- a Harvard-educated lawyer -- may have simply been ignorant of the law and thus violated it unintentionally. "You kind of have to drop the standard for the first lady, right?" the official explained late Thursday. "I mean, she's pretty well liked and probably doesn't know what she's doing."

The IL Elections official says she broke the law.

You ought to read the law and what it says about people helping others vote. I skimmed through it when somebody posted a link to the law on one of the threads earlier and I didn't get the impression that the law as written would stand in the way of somebody getting help to vote.

The law wouldn't say "any other person" if it didn't mean "any other person". If the simple language of a law is still wide open to the discretionary whim of some official, then we aren't operating under the rule of law. We're then operating under the rule of men.

I don't see this as something they ought to pursue legal action against Michelle Obama over, but I DO think the White House and Michelle should admit that she violated the law by mistake. The Executive Branch of our country shouldn't be sending the message that what the laws say is irrelevant.
