Russia may sell S-300 missiles to Venezuela, instead of Iran
RIA Novosti ^ | 10/15/2010 | RIA Novosti

Russia's S-300 air defense systems, which Moscow refused to deliver to Iran following a new round of UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic, could be sold to Venezuela instead, a Russian arms trade expert said on Friday.

Russia signed a deal to deliver five battalions of S-300PMU-1 air defense systems to Iran in 2007 but banned the sale in September, saying the systems, along with a number of other weapons, were covered by the fourth round of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council against Iran over its nuclear program in June.

"Russia is looking for a buyer of five battalions of S-300PMU-1 air defense systems ordered by Iran, which are worth $800 million, and Venezuela could become such a buyer," said Igor Korotchenko, head of a Moscow-based think tank on the international arms trade.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who is currently on a visit to Russia, earlier said his country was interested in buying different types of Russian-made air defense systems to create a multilayered air defense network.

stepping back in time...

NOTE The following blog entry is a quote:

Venezuelan Ambassador to Iran: Chavez, Ahmadinejad Are The New World Leaders

Venezuelan Ambassador to Iran David Velasquez has said that the Venezuela’s and Iran’s establishment of a refinery in Syria is part of the close Iran-Venezuela energy cooperation, and said that his country was willing to sell Iran up to 20,000 barrels of refined oil daily at market prices.

He said that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were the new world leaders.

The Ahwazi-Sunni opposition organization in Iran stated that Iran had set up a committee headed by Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commander Mohammad Ali Jafari that was acting secretly, via straw companies, to secure supplies of petroleum distillates that would be needed by the IRGC and the Basij in time of war. He added that secret storage depots for the fuel had already been set up.

That’s certainly a possibility, DJ. But that’s a long, circuitous route. It would be a shame if anything were to happen to them enroute, eh?

Oh yea, memories of the good ole days and SAC. B-52s flying around the clock with big bombs. Hell, I would settle for Maj. "King" Kong right about now.

With the information of the computers captured this month from the FARC Colombia knows the location of every FARC base within 60 to 100 kilometers of it's borders with Venezuela and Equador. Fidelito Chavez knows that Colombia has direct knowledge of how the FARC is being funded by Venezuela and Colombia is really tired of it. I think it is only a matter of time before they get upset enough to hit them the bases in Venezuela while in “hot pursuit” of a FARC raiding party.

Take out the Castros, Chavez, Correa and may be Morelas though he is really dumb and just a follower and the Americas would be a much better place!

Colombia is holding it's breath. Before any attack on the FARC bases they are hoping two or three things make it unnecessary. 1. The good people of Venezuela take out Chavez, 2. regime change happens in Iran and 3. The dumba$$ in the White House is removed and or replaced by someone “understand”.

I see this as almost benign, except that Chavez is a threat to his neighbors. To me, this is a cargo cult mentality. The S-300s will be parade ground props, for the most part.

Unless those systems are kept in AirCon storage they tend to rot in the tropics after 24 to 36 months. Likewise with almost all Russian made military equipment.
