Arson blamed for fire that destroyed Mormon church in Mukilteo Washington
The Herald ^ | October 16, 2010 | Gale Fiege

Posted on 10/16/2010 7:37:24 PM PDT by Ripliancum

MUKILTEO — Arson is the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a church building next door to Kamiak High School, fire and police officials said. No one was injured in the blaze.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Mukilteo Fire and Police departments concluded Saturday afternoon that the fire was started outside near the back entry of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building at the corner of Harbour Pointe Boulevard and Chennault Beach Drive.

The two-alarm fire, first reported shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, has left two Mormon congregations without a place to worship.

Firefighters at the nearby Mukilteo Fire Department responded within minutes, said Assistant Fire Chief Brian McMahan.

I wouldn’t go that far but I do hope they solve the problem before they start rebuilding it. It’s no use rebuilding if it will be burned again. Thank goodness the arsonist(s) attacked while no one was there. Someone knows the congregation enough, I suppose, to know that while the building has security lights inside, it doesn’t have a fulltime presence in the building.

But the buildings are designed to host multiple congregations in each one so doubling up won’t be much of a problem Our city once had five separate congregations sharing the same building, about the same design and size as the one here that burned, for about eighteen months as construction was going on. It was challenging but possible.

Can;t argue with that. The times are getting scary. I am constantly after the people of my congregation to be more careful about locking up the building, especially those with access keys for non-Sunday activities. Hubby and I constantly patrol the building for locked doors before we leave and half the time at least one door, interior or exterior, that should be locked, isn’t.

The ATF is regularly called in on cases suspected of being arson caused.

They have a division specifically for arson and explosives. I believe it falls under the “F” in ATF

Here's more info, from the Seattle Times, as to why the ATF was called in.

“Investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joined the investigation Saturday because of the size of the fire and its location at a church, the assistant chief said.”

Well, fortunately, we don’t have to “guess”. Evidence points to deliberate arson, and they came to that conclusion very quickly. Investigators aren’t saying what that evidence is, as they seek out those responsible.

They could start their investigation right here at FR, based on some of the downright hateful posts here about Mormons.

#1: I seemed to recall a Mormon being zotted a few months ago for suggesting that FREEPERS might be the place to start an investigation re: the murder of a Mormon bishop in Visalia. Is there a zot machine that needs to be warmed up?

#2: Let me be unequivocable: I have Mormon relatives whom I dearly love who enjoy and should enjoy the same religious freedom to worship that I enjoy. And I'm a descendant of a Mormon who came from a country where there was a bit less religious freedom in favor of gaining more.

Hence, I condemn the arsonist as one devoted to destruction and chaos.

#3: Now. If contemporary Mormons condemned
-- or were to condemn
-- Mayor Joseph Smith who ordered
-- and his minions who carried out the order
-- the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor's property
-- to the near same degree and with the same rough outrage
-- as they express regarding this act...
...then hey, we not only might get somewhere...
...but there wouldn't likely be a Mormon church.
Why not? Because the Mormon exodus would all be internal. They would all recognize Joseph Smith for the destructive ruthless, lawless, ruffian criminal pied piper that he was. I mean what? Just because Smith's mobocrats carried out their act "consisting of some 200 men, armed and equipped, with Muskets, Swords, Pistols, Bowie Knives, Sledge-Hammers" instead of an arsonist's tools, that it somehow establishes it as on another plane of consideration?

Source and paragraph context of this quote: From the June 12, 1844 Warsaw Messenger: Mr. Sharp: -- I hasten to inform you of the UNPARALLELED OUTRAGE, perpetrated upon our rights and interests, by the ruthless, lawless, ruffian band of MORMON MOBOCRATS, at the dictum that of that UNPRINCIPLED wretch Joe Smith. We were privately informed that the CITY COUNCIL, which had been in extra session, for two days past; had enacted an ordinance in relation to libels, providing that anything that had been published, or anything that might be published tending to disparage the character of the officers of the city should be regarded as LAWLESS. They also declared the "Nauvoo Expositor," a "nuisance," and directed the police of the city to proceed immediately to the office of the Expositor and DESTROY THE PRESS and also the MATERIALS, by THROWING them into the STREET!!!! If any resistance were made, the officers were directed to demolish the building and property, of all who were concerned in publishing said paper; and also take all into custody, who might refuse to obey the authorities of the City. Accordingly, a company consisting of some 200 men, armed and equipped, with Muskets, Swords, Pistols, Bowie Knives, Sledge-Hammers, &c, assisted by a crowd of several hundred minions, who volunteered their services on the occasion, marching to the building, and breaking open the doors with a Sledge Hammer, commenced the work of destruction and desperation. They tumbled the press and materials into the street, and set fire to them, and demolished the machinery with sledge hammer, and injured the building very materially. We made no resistance; but looked on and felt revenge, but leave it for the public to avenge this climax of insult and injury. See: Unparalleled Outrage at Nauvoo

What? When the Nauvoo Expositor was destroyed, that only belonged on "the Religion page?" And was the source I cited from "the Religion page" of the Warsaw Messenger, 1844? Or from the front news page?

Words cannot describe how pathetic of an argument that is -- one coming from what must be a hermetically sealed secular/sacred compartmentalized mind.

If they haven't done so in the past, Mormons need to prepare to defend themselves and to brace for more violent attacks. Ever since Proposition 8 was passed, there's been a faint odor of an impending anti-Mormon "Kristallnacht" in the air. Liberals are just waiting to pounce. Liberals very likely see Mormons as a relatively safe group to attack.

I told my good friend, who is a Mormon, this. He just smiled and said God would take care of him and his family. Now, I like and respect him, but I think he's a fool on this particular point.

Hating Mormons is sport for many. A ‘crime’ is the last thing they would think of it being.

[Stourme discusses]

1980s in which anti-Mormon protestors outside the Denver temple threw stones and "a firebombing scare was reported.

The reason I bought a 9mm in the 80's wasn't because I was afraid of the gays.

As you well know Rip, we all have our stories....

The world seems to be turning upside down now. The peace loving hippies are now the violent ones.

This fire was obviously done by liberal atheists. The liberal blogs are full of people raging about everything. Just pure hatred. With at least one thread, on a very prominent democrat site polling it's members on their willingness to start an armed conflict with conservatives.

It just fits the pattern. Todays liberals are violent. The church building was burned as a protest against our stance on marriage and homosexuality. (preaching to the choir I'm sure)

I think you will find that to a man (or woman) like me the so called “antis” would be the first to shoot a SOB who even began to harm a Mormon or one of their houses of worship. To paraphrase R. Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket, your little group maybe silly and ignorant but you are fellow Americans and that enough for us to defend your right to do whatever with in the confine of law and our rights.

We want the fight in the court of ideas.
