'Assassination attempt on Ahmadinejad thwarted'

10/18/10

Lebanese intelligence prevented an assassination attempt on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during his visit to Lebanon last week, reported Kuwaiti newspaper al-Siyasa as cited by Channel 10 News.

Sources told the newspaper that as Ahmadinejad was making his way to Bint J'beil, an order was received from Lebanese intelligence to stop the Iranian president's convoy and return to Beirut.

The paper reported that Hizbullah was not convinced by the information and insisted on taking responsibility for the safety of Ahmadinejad, but Lebanese President Michel Suleiman intervened, saying Ahmadinejad's safety was the responsibility of the state.

Not a very comfortable time to be a leader of a Middle Eastern country. In addition to recent reports/rumors of assassination attempts on Lebanese PM Hariri and Turkish PM Erdogan, now it looks like there was a recent attempt on Ahmadinejad's life . . . too bad that didn't work out.

It was probably a ploy. They would love for Israel to take a shot at him, but they know Israel is too civilized for their backward games. So, the next best thing is to fake it.

Yep it was the Jews.

Not sure if it fake or not, but it certainly fleshes out the growing tension in Lebanon between Hezbollah (and the “Resistance parties”) and the Hariri/March14 coalition. IMO this whole issue with the STL indictments for the 2005 assassination of Hariri is going to lead to some serious bloodshed in Lebanon.

Report: Ahmadinejad survived an assassination attempt during Lebanon visit

10/18/10

A Kuwaiti newspaper on Monday claimed that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad survived an assassination attempt during his last week’s visit to Lebanon. Following information gathered by the Lebanese intelligence, the Iranian leader changed his accommodation from “Phoenicia Hotel’ to’the Iranian embassy in Beirut, the report added.

According to the newspaper, the arrival of the Iranian leader to south Lebanon on Thursday was delayed by more than two hours. The sources cited by the newspaper said that his convoy began to move toward the south on the Coastal Road but then it was ordered to return amid fears among the top officers of the Lebanese army that the assassins will try to hurt him during the trip. The Iranian president’s convoy returned back to the airport in Beirut and an argument developed between Hizbullah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and head of the army. Nasrallah claimed that the road is secured by his men but the army was not sure about this. At the end the Iranian leader went to the south by helicopter.

For fear of his assassination, Ahmadinejad did not spend the night as planned at Beirut’s Phoenicia Hotel but in his country’a embassy in the Lebanese capital. He was secretly rushed early in the morning to the hotel to dine with his guests.

It should be noted that before the visit an unnamed Sunni organization vowed to kill the Iranian president.

I don’t way ANY leader anywhere assassinated. The world is too much of a tinder box right now. It’s how WWI started and I don’t want a repeat of hostilities. I never want to see any murdered anytime, but now in particular. I remember the 60s and am not anxious to experience the unrest again.

I'm no fan of Nejad but the fact is he did end up in Bint J'beil, gave a speech, toured the camp, was 2 klicks from Israel.

Not much traction on that security alert. Screwball story.

they know Israel is too civilized for their backward games.

I wouldn't bet the proverbial farm on that. Ask the terrorist organization known as Black September who were the main players in the murder of the Olympic Athletes in the '72 Olympics at Munich. MOSSAD hunted them across Europe and killed the majority of their leadership. A couple of movies even sprang from those rather successful efforts. In many cases the hitters made it look like street muggings, so no martydom for those "Tango's." MOSSAD has an entire section dedicated to such "wet work." They're certainly not above such direct action. They just haven't made a specific decision regarding pulling the trigger on IMANUTJOB.... yet.

BTW, Israel had two drones overhead the whole time, above Nejad’s convoy. Israel was very careful to make sure Nejad stayed safe and not get blamed for any “accidents”.

I don’t think the threat was from Israel. There was a sunni group that threatened to take out Nejad while in town.

What I find just as interesting about the story is the turf war bewteen the LAF and Hezbollah, particularly in context of the current Lebanese political crisis over the STL indictments.

Israel knew they would get blamed and were indirectly providing security also, it's a crazy world. What ever the threat, it was neutralized or ignored, tour plans never changed.

Sunni's would have a great, great difficulty penetrating the Hezbollah security, or they would have taken out Nasrallah by now.

There was a well known dinner for all later at the Iranian embassy in Beirut that could have been mortared, car bombed, etc., that Nasrallah attended. It would be much easier to take Nejad out in Iran at all the community speeches he gives.

Neutralized, ignored OR circumvented. While the tour plans didn’t change his method of travel to S. Lebanon changed. Instead of going down in a convoy, he went to Beirut international and took a helicopter down the Beit Jainl and he also stayed the evening at the Iranian embassay rather than the Royal Phoenician hotel.

I know it’s just semantics, but it sounded like a serious enough attempt on Ahmadinejad’s life that Nasrallah and the LAF chief got into a shouting match about Nejad’s security.

+1 about it being easier to take out Nejad in Iran than Lebanon. His popularity is alot higher in S. Lebanon than it is in Iran at the moment.

And so they did. GREAT SHOOTING, IDF!

And that wikie link makes him look so unthreatening. He was a VILE PIG WHO AUTHORIZED AND PLANNED KIDNAPPINGS AND SUICIDE BOMBINGS against women and children.

PS to Twig: re "The world is too much of a tinder box right now. It’s how WWI started and I don’t want a repeat of hostilities."

And we all remember /read about the 30's and 40's - if Hitler or Stalin had been killed early over a hundred million people wouldn't have been slaughtered and almost 500 million wouldn't have been enslaved / brainwashed into communism, and the Left in the U.S. today would be a footnote, instead of ACTIVE ALLIES OF WORLD WIDE ISLAMIC JIHAD.
