Nope, you're not dreaming, but feel free to pinch yourself, rub your eyes or take a cold shower! You've read right -- the HP Slate is finally official, and after all the teasing, back and forth, and (very recent) leaks, the Atom-powered, Windows 7 Slate will finally see the light of day -- though in a different way than originally intended. While the first videos released by HP may have made it seem like it would be for consumers, HP's tactfully changed its tune (don't forget it's got Palm / WebOS tablets on the way) and is now aiming the Slate at the enterprise and business market. Still, it will be available on HP's site for $799 to anyone who wishes to purchase one.
So, what does $800 of your hard earned cash buy you? Well, in addition to the dock and case, which are included in the box, the tablet packs pretty much everything we'd heard over the last year -- it's powered by a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB SSD and packs Broadcom's Crystal HD accelerator for handling 1080p video. (The included dock has an HDMI-out port if you want to hook it up to the big screen.) Obviously, the 8.9-inch capacitive touch Slate runs Windows 7 Professional, but it's got a Wacom active digitizer for taking notes, which certainly sets it apart from the other Win 7 tablets we've seen over the last couple of weeks. Oh, and don't forget its front facing VGA cam and 3 megapixel camera on its back. We got a chance to finally grope the tablet earlier this week, so hit the break for our early impressions and a short video.

I love that name. Slate. I would have thought it would have been the first names used for a “tablet” computer.
I’m just going to hold out for the Wi-Fi Galaxy S or maybe one of the new ones that will come out in Jan.

I just read about the Macbook Air and after I read about the Slate thought “Why would I want a Slate?”.
Good question. Suppose what you really want is access to Win7 as well as OS-X?
Get a Macbook Air with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD, and VMware Fusion, and run Win7 in a VM -- best of both worlds for less than the cost of both separately.
Or skip the VMware, and BootCamp the SSD. Now with OSX 10.6, the BootCamp drivers for Win7 permit reading the OS-X partition from Windows (and vice versa as before) which is really handy.
yeah but you know I don’t think I would even VMWare, well maybe for a few games but I’ll live.
Anyway, I am using MS Office and I would just use the compatibility mode of Apple OS and it should run fine. Wouldn’t it?
The rest of the software I use is shareware/freeware and everyone makes Apple compatibles.
I don’t think I would need to invest in VM but if I did, it would still be fine.
Win7 is the best Windows yet... but if you don't need to run Windows, there's no need to pay the price for it.
Hell, I would run Ubuntu or whatever.
Personally, I can’t stand the new office suite and am using 2003. I don’t know what the hell all those little annoying changes are but they were pretty damn stark.
I am waiting the next suite and then I will run both at the same time until I am comfortable with the new one.
Besides, I saved all kinds of loot not upgrading.
I like the Macbook because it has a frickin’ keyboard, unlike the Itouch, which is completely useless.
I like the tactile feel of punching keys about 100 words a minute and I would have to learn the Itouch and really it would be some thing that would end up flying 92 miles an hour out of frustration.
I think for Christmas I might buy the fully loaded Macbook. Nice footprint and I don’t need a big screen anymore what with large screens I dock to at the office and the projector.
Been thinking about 3M’s pocket projector as well. Then I could carry everything in one briefcase.
I wonder if I could run Mac on the Slate the way I run it on my Toshiba?

I completely agree about keyboards. I LOVE the full-size (with separate numeric keypad) keyboard on my 17" HP laptop; I simply cannot stand those on-screen keyboards, even to the point that my cell phone has a slide-out keyboard (HTC Touch Pro2). Not to mention that any time the keyboard "pops on screen" you lose half your real-estate!
Slate is interesting for some apps; combine it with a decent thin Bluetooth or USB-connected keyboard in a folding "cover" for it, and you have a nice, portable package for low-mid level keyboard usage applications. But on-screen? Not for me...

Yep, agreed. The real-estate problem is awful; I got an SSh app for the iPod Touch to be able to check my servers at work if I'm out somewhere downtown without a computer, and it's more frustrating than you can imagine.
