Rep. Moran (D-Virginia 8th): Serving in the military isn’t public service
Washington Examiner ^ | 10/21/2010 | Barbara Hollingsworth

Posted on 10/22/2010 7:48:10 AM PDT by Qbert

Virginia Congressman Jim Moran, D-8th, doesn’t think serving in the military is public service. At the October 6th meeting of the Arlington County Democratic Committee, Moran was videotaped telling fellow party members:

“What [Republicans] do is find candidates, usually stealth candidates, that haven’t been in office, haven’t served or performed in any kind of public service. My opponent is typical, frankly.”

However, Moran’s opponent happens to be Col. Patrick Murray (US Army-Ret.), who served 24 years in uniform, was deployed to four different combat zones, including Baghdad, as part of the 2007 troop surge under Gen. David Petraeus, and was even shot at by foreign combatants. If that isn’t public service, I don’t know what is.

Paper shuffling in Washington, apparently. And this was not Moran’s only military-related misstep.

On October 11th, the Military Officers Association of America sent a letter to the Moran campaign requesting that the congressman stop distributing a flyer clearly implying that MOAA had endorsed Moran for reelection.

“As a not-for-profit organization governed by the Internal Revenue Code, the Military Officers Association of America is barred by law from participating or intervening, either directly or indirectly, in any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for elective public office,” wrote Maj. Gen. Joseph Lynch (USAF-Ret.), MOAA’s general counsel.

“MOAA did recognize Rep. Moran in 1999 with our Arthur T. Marix Congressional Leadership Award. But the campaign flyer implies a more recent and more explicit MOAA rating/endorsement in connection with this campaign that did not occur.”

So Moran disses his opponent’s military record when he’s with his Democratic pals, then uses – without authorization – the reputation of a military group to help him get reelected. Classy. MOAA should spend a bit more time vetting future awardees.

“Serving honorably in the military, as Col. Murray did for 24 years, is the best kind of public service anyone can do for our great nation,” says Tommy Valentine, webmaster of RetireJimMoran.com. “Moran needs to apologize.”

In that context, maybe Moran is right. Military service is far more honorable than the “public service” of bureaucrats and politicians.

You have to understand the Dem-politician jargon:
"served or performed in any kind of public service" = "fed at the public trough".

Yeah, I just wrote a post on this over at Radio Vice Online, and Ed Morrissey picked up on it this morning too.

These stories that have the ability to go viral quickly can really direct upwards of $1 million to a candidate within 24 to 48 hours, but I’m not sure there is enough time to take the resources and change some minds in northern Virginia.

At this point, neighbors talking to neighbors will be a primary factor, and since many of the 8th district’s voters are federal employees ...

The most selfless act a citizen can do is to pledge to put their body between their country and those who would harm it.

Because whenever he says something outrageously stupid that OUGHT to be front page news, the controlled liberal media won't touch it. It's the "free pass" treatment that every other Democrat gets from the media, while every Republican gets a proctological examination every day.

There's basically very little difference from this sort of thing, and actual vote fraud at the ballot box. Both are designed to affect the outcome of elections in favor of the Democrats.

I despise Moran I hope Murray uses this for the next two weeks. This race is close enough that this can put Murray into striking distance and then over the top.

This is perfectly consistent with the view of the ruling class.

The military, like us mere taxpaying peasants, are mere tools and servants of the ruling class.

Public service is equated with being a member of the ruling class.

Of course, when the shoe is on the other foot, a mere doofus who nearly killed himself and the men around him by being careless with a grenade is feted as a wounded combat veteran. Can anyone name this former Democrat member of congress and the Clinton administration?
