ABC News ^ | Oct. 20, 2010 | SCOTT MAYEROWITZ

A Transportation Security Administration supervisor has been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in cash from passengers going through an airport checkpoint.

As passengers -- mostly foreigners heading home -- came through the checkpoint at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport, the supervisor and another TSA agent would subject them to secondary searches and allegedly take cash from their carry-on bags.

The supervisor, Michael Arato, 41, of Ewing, N.J., was changed with one count of accepting bribes, one count of conspiring to commit theft and three counts of theft by a government employee. The other TSA worker is now cooperating with authorities and has not been named in court records.

I would be bored too if my entire shift consisted of yelling at people’s faces for the entire 8 hour shift to place their laptops in a large plastic tray..

I have a friend who is a TSA agent and he tells me that agents even steal from one another.

He bought himself a heavy-duty padlock to make sure that no one would break into his locker...

Another time, the pair discussed how they did not feel bad stealing from foreign passengers who were leaving the country with "our money."

I just want the bastard that stole the suit out of my bag when I was flying back from Las Vegas back in 2005.

TSA is one of the most glaring examples of an idiotic response to a threat.

A friend of my wife works at the boarding gates at SeaTac airport. She spends time walking through the “basement” to get to and from locations.

One day, while walking through this “basement” area she found two or three TSA employees rummaging through a couple of large bags in a “dark corner”. When they saw her they basically said something along the lines of “We’re inspecting bags. Move along, citizen.”

I don’t know what ever cam of that. It was around two years ago.

I never pack anything of value in a suitcase. Ever.

The TSA is nothing but a jobs program for the chronically unemployed.

TSA is one of the most glaring examples of an idiotic response to a threat.

I thought Heathrow 1991 (under threat from the IRA) was more secure than Logan 2003. And the Brits, God love 'em, did it all with grace and humor.

This kind of crap is commonplace in third world countries. The low ranking government officials see those up the ladder profiting big time from even larger scale schemes, so view petty theft of this nature as some sort of job entitlement.

Pretty much the same mentality is in play with the SEIU and AFSCME unionized government employees who see themselves as too special to be subjugated to the realities of the marketplace.

The fact that this type of crap is not even more widespread speaks well about American morals.
