Why the Midterms Matter: The GOP’s agenda has to be stopped.
Newsweek ^ | 10/23/10 | Jonathan Alter

Posted on 10/23/2010 7:14:37 AM PDT by paudio

The depressed Democratic base needs to ask itself some questions: Do women want more representatives who oppose abortion? Do Hispanics want to see immigration reform postponed? Do young voters want college loans slashed? If they don’t, they’ll set aside whatever valid grievances they may have with Obama and mobilize.

If Democrats lose control anyway, maybe nothing too bad will happen. Obama will veto GOP bills, and politics will be paralyzed for two years as the parties jostle for 2012. But a right-wing Republican takeover of Congress and state capitals isn’t something to accept with indifference. Midterms matter, and voters tempted to skip this election should have their heads examined.

About the author: Jonathan Alter is an award-winning columnist, television analyst and author. Since 1991, Alter has written a widely-acclaimed Newsweek column that examines politics, media and social and global issues. For more than a decade, he has worked as a contributing correspondent to NBC News. His 2006 book, "The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope," was a national bestseller. Alter is also an originator and author of Newsweek's "Conventional Wisdom Watch," which uses up, down and sideways arrows to measure and lampoon the news. As an editor, he helps shape the magazine's overall news coverage.

To me, what's more interesting is not the article itself, but the understanding of who the author is, and on what capacity he is related to Newsweek.

This is not news. This is DU talking points in print. It reads as if it were dictated by Obama word for word. Spewsweek fails.

"...Gains in statehouses and legislatures will allow right-wingers to use the 2010 census to redraw district lines that will entrench them in power until 2020. Back in charge in Washington, they will likely block even centrist choices for courts..."

I don't know...all sounds pretty good to me.

They should also ask themselves the opposite, do Americans want to be over run by illegal immigrants who take our resources to have a decent life fot its citizens, do the voters want to pay for everyone elses needs for education etc..do Americans want to pay for abortions when they are morally opposed to it...then they should mobilize against th democratic party and vote conservative..it appears all the issues which are being used by the democraps are one which involve invasion , redistribution of resources to other countries, and out right over throw of the principles of a republic..obamma mamba jamma lenin khomeini and the bunch deserve the voter ass kickin they are about to get and may we never forget who they are..

The most surprising thing about this article is that people are still reading Newsweak. Everything thing else is par for the course.

Yeah, or who knows what might happen. We might have an economic recovery, shrinking government, lower taxes, lower unemployment, and more liberty. Can't have that! :-/

If Democrats lose control anyway, maybe nothing too bad will happen. Obama will veto GOP bills, and politics will be paralyzed for two years as the parties jostle for 2012.

And the problem with a paralyzed fed is??? If a GOP Congress and a socialist hussein obama are fighting and thwarting each other, they won't be stomping on our liberties. Where's the problem with that? Sounds like a winning strategy: put hussein obama and his radical socialist agenda in a holding pattern until 2012 when we can replace the little fascist.

Newsweek was recently sold for one dollar. With Alter you are certainly getting your monies worth.

Do women want more representatives who oppose abortion?
Conservatives want representatives who will oppose the funding of abortions by taxpayers. Stop distorting the issue by framing the question in the form of Prohibition.

Do Hispanics want to see immigration reform postponed?
Guess what: many polls show that legal Hispanic citizens support SB1070 and oppose amnesty (i.e. "immigration reform"). Besides, Obama has had TWO YEARS & a Super Majority; he "postponed" it because he said a LOT of Immigration Reform B.S. just to fool Hispanics (legal & not) into voting for him. And Obama's idea of "reform" involves doing nothing about the border. He lets the illegals infest all communities by default and gimme-gimme-gimme-amnesty becomes inevitable.

Do young voters want college loans slashed?
Actually, I would think that young voters don't want to go to the Government Mafia (i.e. Student Loan Program) and be told that "someday, you will do us a favor in return."

NO bias here.

“Nothing to see here. Lettuce just moveon.org folks. Just moveon.org.”

(Yes, he is a “columnist” not a “reporter” - who is just as biased as their MSM’s ABCNNBCBS “reporters.”

I’m not sure I understand - is Newsweek trying to become *more* bankrupt? Is their goal to lower their corporate value below the $1 they’re presently worth?

By all means Jonathan, let's continue to rack up staggering federal debt, keep unemployment hovering around 10%, make energy expensive, raise health-care insurance premiums, discriminate against white voters, and allow Mexican drug gangs terrorize the counties along our southern border.

Freaking Moron.

You're right. I thought they had gone under. Wasn't there a "national" news magazine that went under? Or was it bought for 1$ or some such? Well, a free market will eventually rid us of drivel like Newsweek - probably why they are afraid of free markets and the libs keep pushing idiocy like the fairness doctrine, or any of its follow on acts with Orwellian double-speak names that are anything but fair and balanced.

In brief: repeal health-care reform, so if you lose your job and your kid gets sick, you may have to sell the house

This isn't even decent communist propaganda. Private health insurance for kids is extremely cheap. Unfortunately, Obamacare will make it impossible for private health insurance companies to remain in business and polls show that about half of our doctors will quit or go into early retirement soon after Obamacare goes into effect. Government health care means rationing and very long lines and that's a much worse situation for a sick kid.
