Cao Is No Goner (Louisiana update)
The American Spectator ^ | October 21, 2010 | Quin Hillyer

Posted on 10/25/2010 6:34:25 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Here is the situation on the ground. Before the campaign really heated up, Cao actually led the polls by a wide margin, because his hard work and sincerity have made him very popular among all races and ethnicities in the New Orleans area. Once the campaign heated up and he was re-identified in the black community as a Republican, he dropped behind. But internal polls -- and my own anecdotal sources, as a native New Orleanian and veteran of New Orleans politics -- show him now within a typical survey's margin of error.

He also has momentum. National Democrats, thinking Cao a goner, have withdrawn campaign aid for Democratic opponent, state Rep. Cedric Richmond. But Richmond has a checkered past that the local media finally is starting to really focus on. Amidst other official ethics problems, Richmond lost his law license for lying in election qualifying papers in 2005. He's also under fire, or under investigation, for alleged financial shenanigans involving a non-profit with which he has been closely associated.

Though Cao has cast some bad votes, his record overall is pretty good. It would be a prize if he were to get reelected.

So, in other words, he's a model Democrat...

I am filing this post under wishful thinking. Cao is there because the former Congressman Jefferson was indicted for not defrosting his $90,000 and removing it from his Maytag and burying it in the yard. He is a fluke. There is no way an overwhelmingly black district is going to reelect an Asian Republican vs a black Democrat that has less three felony convictions. Can you name an overwhelmingly black distict that has elected a non black Republican or for that matter black Republican in the last 30 years other than Cao’s fluke the last time.

Oh yes, let's elect another corrupt politician to fill that seat.

Remember this is Dollar Bill Cold Cash Jefferson's old seat. The D in the race is right up there as far as corrupt goes. Cao on the other hand isn't corrupt. He will not vote lock step with the D's either.

It’s not going to happen in that district. Cao is as conservative as it will get. The demographics are kind of like the same as Rangell’s, Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters, etc.

Bad votes? You man the vote that moved Obamacare foward I would say that was a really Bad vote and if he was in my district I would not vote for him. “Republican opposition has been virtually unanimous in both houses - only Rep. Anh (Joseph) Cao of Louisiana among GOP lawmakers has voted for the bill”

If being the only (R) to vote for 0bamacare is as conservative as it gets in that district, I say let the dems have it. Like Demint said, "I’d rather have 40 Marco Rubios than 60 Arlen Specters..."

Typical New Orleans Democrat. Is anyone surprised?

Cao voted in favor of the inital version of the bill had the Stupak amendment to prevent funding of abortion. After Stupak betrayed us and sold his soul for Obama, Cao voted NO on the final passage of the bill (tbe version that became law)

If a marxist New Orleans RAT gets that seat, you better believe they'd vote YES.

Cao isn't as conservative as I'd like, but he's far better than any RAT in that area. Nor is a Republican In Name Only. There are many things he voted for that a Dem wouldn't be caught dead supporting.

Cao is not an Arlen Specter, the two disagree on many issues. For example, Specter has always been pro-abortion while Cao is proudly pro-life.

You don't understand how the development of the bill.

The stupak AMENDMENT to the bill (the amendment Cao and all other Republicans voted in favor of) was well-written and had universal support from pro-life groups. They were ready to give him an award for it.

After the Senate stripped the amendment from the bill, the Stupak COMPROMISE with Obama to have an "executive order" not to fund abortion was announced. That was something totally different and wasn't worth the paper it was written on. Stupak sold us down the river on that, pro-life groups decried it, and Cao (and every other Republican Congressman was well) voted NO on the FINAL PASSAGE of the bill AFTER the phony "compromise" was reached.

>> Obviously you do not set the bar very high. <<

My bar is simple. RINO stands for Republican In Name Only,

Is a "Republican" official voting with the Democrats on a majority of issues? (Kirk, Jeffords, etc.) If so, they're a RINO. If they're voting with the GOP on a majority of issues, they're not a Republican In Name Only.

Some freepers have set the bar so low that Republicans who agree with them 95% of the time are "RINOs" because they don't follow that freeper's bidding on every bill ever proposed. Every politican is a "RINO" by that definition.

Dude, you are so totally clueless. Cao voted in favor of the meaningless first draft bill on healthcare and then voted against the actual bill. It was discussed for weeks all over the news and here at FR.

I don’t live in Cao’s district, but I would certainly vote for him over a rat crook. I guess you prefer the rat?

Oh, I guess that makes it better. I will not get sucked in to power through numbers. I prefer to win in the arena of ideas. Any vote for 0bamacare, I don't care if it was at an office party at Hooters after 5 hours of half priced drinks and half dressed waitresses, disqualifies a candidate from getting my support. As far as I'm concerned, Cao can join 17% of the country by scratching his unemployed a$$ on November 3rd and I will dance a jig in his honor.
