NEW YORK (Reuters) – A U.S. federal judge on Tuesday granted the music industry's request to shut down the popular LimeWire file-sharing service, which had been found liable for copyright infringement, the company said.

The ruling requires LimeWire to "disable the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality of the software," according to LimeWire.

It is a shame, they can try to shut it down, but there is more, and more will popup... Not that I'm advocating it ;)

I haven’t used Limewire in years, but isn’t it just a GNUtella client with no centralized servers to ‘shut down’?

Government trying to stop Peer-To-Peer file sharing by net users is a futile exercise.

I think they had dedicated servers, but you can use eMule or FileDonkey to get around that - they're not centralized P2P services, and it would be a bitch to try to shut them down. You can find updated server lists for them all over the net. Not that I ever used them, though.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

I got all the old worthless songs i needed over 10 years ago, All 2685 or so, Mostly from the 60’s-80’s.
Haven’t found much of anything lately that i would possibly want, especially the new songs that i would not even bother loading up limewire for nowadays.

Hey RIAA , You’re ship has sailed and the one you’re stuck on is the Titanic.
Too bad for you.

Just about any and every song or video is on YouTube.
You can burn the videos to dvd or just burn the audio part to cd’s.

Who the Hell-o uses Limewire anyway?
Chock full of malware and other crapola.

I’ve always thought it was RIAA that was putting on the viruses.

I thought I was a heavy user of Limewire, but they were down over a month before I realized it. But then I really needed it. I tried your filedonkey suggestion and that was painfully slow.

However, on a lark, I googled “limewire vs” and discovered something called frostwire. http://www.wmatomp3-converter.com/guide/FrostWire-vs-Limewire.html

I’ll be trying that out tonight. :)

I’ve used limewire for YEARS, but it took me two months to notice. ;)

The reason I am responding is that this shutdown forced me to go the Torrent route, which many have recommended. Well, I did, and all I can say is “OMG!!!”

I discovered uTorrent.

It took ten minutes to try to figure it out, but once I did, I was stunned at what I found. I’ve been trying to get bits and pieces of all of the albums by Firesign Theater for YEARS. I go to uT and almost immediately find a single download that includes, in FOLDER/FILE format, every album released by firesign theater AND the splintered groups (Proctor/Bergman, etc.)

Then, on a lark, I decide to try to find a movie that I cannot find anywhere. Even Netflix doesn’t have it. It is a George C. Scott movie called “They Might Be Giants” from around 1971. Well, I finished the “high rez” download yesterday.

And right now I am downloading Vanishing Point and Two Lane Blacktop.

Oh, and I used limewire to get Quadrophenia and Pulse, but each downloaded as a single file. With uT, I get each as a folder, and all the songs as individual files! And they are 320 kb mp3s, thank you very much.

I’m now GLAD limewire was taken down. It motivated me to join the 21st century.

Good to know a Freeper uses Utorrent..

At work when I wasn’t a freelance consultant like today, I download the movies...ER, I MEAN...ummm “files” to my USB stick. Yes, Utorrent is the only torrent client which actually makes it possible for such a procedure to happen. NOT Azureus.

I still use peer2peer stuff like Filestube for the comic downloads,,er, I mean, “files” but the 100 MB plus files, it’s via torrent.

Never forget to encrypt or have PeerGuardian on at all times to guard against MPAA and RIAA snoops. It’s pretty much a given.
