In his final push against Republican Pat Toomey in the Pennsylvania Senate race, an advertisement from Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak features a bag of feces collected from his family dog. Sestak swings the bag into the trash can, and equates it with the policies of his opponent.
Toomey’s response to this ad is more moderated at a recent campaign event in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. With that advertisement as the baseline, though, it’s hard to think of a response that wouldn’t seem measured.
“The DCC is spending more money attacking me with lies and dishonest ads than they have in any other state,” said Toomey. “That’s how badly they want to win this race.”
Toomey wants it pretty bad himself, even if he’s not resorting to a campaign based on excrement in order to get it. That may be because he doesn’t have to — it’s almost impossible to track spending by outside interest groups at this point, but some estimates funding of Toomey’s race by outside interest groups at 2-to-1 over Sestak. Donations are coming in everywhere from the Chamber of Commerce, to Super PAC American Crossroads, which is advised by Karl Rove.
Toomey sticks mostly to the issues on his most recent bus tour throughout the state this week. The more rural areas of Pennsylvania like Sewickley are key; he’ll have to win big there to combat Sestak’s stronghold in the cities.
“Serial bailouts of failed companies. Government nationalizing whole industries. Spending money on a scale that I never thought was possible. Corresponding debts and deficits that are completely unsustainable,” said Toomey. “You add in cap-and-trade, government run health care... is it any wonder we don’t have a recovery going on?”
An estimated $11 million has been spent in Pennsylvania by outside advocacy groups in total, following a national trend of obsessive campaign expenditures that have not been deterred by the pricey Pittsburgh and Philadelphia media markets. The result has been a topsy-turvy campaign that has Sestak up one moment and Toomey up the next; the race seemed to even out a few days ago, but then more polls were released showing Toomey with a lead in the past day or two. At this point, most analysts are putting the advantage in Toomey’s court, but he’s just taking it all in stride.
“We feel good. We’ve done a great job, our message is clear, but there are 1.2 million more Democrats in Pennsylvania than there are Republicans,” said Tim Kelly, Toomey’s press secretary. “It’s going to be a fight to the finish.”
If he gets there, it would be an impressive accomplishment for the conservative stalwart. Claims of Toomey being “too conservative” for Pennsylvania were exacerbated when Sestak started to call Toomey’s campaign the "O'Donnell-Toomey-Palin" ticket, in reference to Delaware Republican candidate Christine O’Donnell, who is right across the border. Many Pennsylvanians are Democrats from birth, and attaching the tea party label to a Republican here doesn’t do him any good. Toomey has responded by saying that he “doesn’t agree” with O’Donnell, but supporters are quick to insist that he’s a principled conservative through and through.
“Nobody’s more principled than Pat Toomey,” said House Republican Whip Mike Turzai, the state representative from Allegheny County. “No doubt about it, absolutely.”
Roger Boff of Wexford, Pennsylvania, is a little more cynical about it.
“If he doesn’t [stick to his word], I’m going to be just as adamant about sticking it on them,” he said.
It was almost perfectly clear that Boff wasn’t talking about dog poo.

I would argue that Sewickley is not strictly speaking “rural”, but other than that the article is on target.
Toomey has actually taken the high road on many occasions, praising Sestak for his military service, but then going after him on the issues. Sestak in return has gone after Toomey with the smear that he wants to ship all the jobs overseas (something that has resonated with thick-headed PA voters in the past).
An unbelievable amount of union money is pouring into this race. You can’t go five minutes without hearing some panic-stricken ad about how “teabaggers” are about to destroy the country. So shrill that I think they’ve lost their effect.
Now Sestak’s abysmal record on abortion is getting some attention, which should be the final nail in the coffin.

I just came back from visiting family in Pgh. I couldn’t stand to watch TV there, for all the negative political ads. Even without concentrating on the words, they were irritating. And on every few minutes. It was disgusting, I couldn’t stand it and asked how they could. They couldn’t stand it either. They said the crude, negative Dem ads only made them more certain to vote Republican, even though they are not all Republicans. LOL
A few years ago he called himself a “thoughtful democrat”, being a staunch Catholic, I always wondered how he could be one. After seeing and speaking with him this summer, I say he is now a Conservative Republican!
Sestak’s polls must show him losing.
dirty little secret....the Pittsburgh suburbs, even the closer-in, more blue collar suburbs, unlike Sewickley...are turning increasingly Conservative (thank you, Jim Quinn!)
What we have here is lots and lots of union folks whose leaders are willing to throw increasing amounts of their money down a televised rat hole.

There are no shortage of the shrill, ridiculous and idiotic union ads, however. Even on the Quinn and Rose show, it seems every other ad is "Toomey = Wall Street = Greed" put on by the NEA. I heard the first response today which was, believe it or not, paid for by the Republican Senate Committee, not the Toomey campaign.
It is a very measured and calm ad pointing out that Joe Seestak was the guy who voted for the Wall Street bailouts, failed stimulus, etc. So if you want more "business as usual" in Washington, then vote for Seestak.
a. A millionaire,
b. who wants to raise your taxes,
c. while outsourcing every U.S. job to China,
d. in order to do the bidding of his Wall Street masters.
That's right: Republicans are the party of tax RAISERS. Not the Democrats. We can't assume that there aren't millions of voters out there who are stupid enough to fall for those lies, and we'll find out exactly how many on Tuesday.
Yeah and don’t forget the stupid ads that say Republicans want to destroy Social Security by giving it to Wall Street. We are being bombarded by radio commercials that tell old people that their current Social Security is in a secure lock box, safe and sound while the dirty rotten GOP wants to take it away from them.
That reminds of the Gubernatorial campaign in Florida in 1994 where the loony left had one of their few bright spots that year - they stopped a Bush from getting elected (their only other accomplishment was stopping Michael Huffington in CA - he was doomed thanks to his nutjob of a wife).
At the last minute of the 1994 campaign, with Jeb leading in the polls, Chiles put through robo-calls to thousands of Florida seniors, saying that Jeb would reduce or take away their Social Security. A blatant lie - as if a GOVERNOR of a state can stop a FEDERAL program.
Naturally, the slimy Chiles denied any involvement with this dirty lie that scared thousands of elderly voters into switching their vote from R to D. But when he was safely in office, he admitted that he did in fact pull that particular dirty trick.
There's no reason that we shouldn't expect some kind of similar Democrat Dirty Trick in 2010, especially in a state like PA where we have nearly as many senior citizens as Florida.
