An Historic aircraft which was Britain’s last line of defence in the Cold War could be grounded or sold unless its owners can raise £150,000 by the end of tomorrow.

The Vulcan, the last all-British designed and built military aircraft, was on around-the-clock standby to drop the atomic bomb on the Soviet Union during the east-west standoff.

Now the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, which displays the last flying Vulcan – XH558 – at air shows during the summer, needs to raise money urgently to maintain the aircraft at RAF Lyneham until Christmas.

Bummer. The last one flying. Mebbe they’ve still got some space at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum annex out at Dulles, VA?

The only time the Vulcan got to drop bombs in anger was over the Falklands. Just as well, as it was designed for nuclear armageddon.

An oddly stealthy design for its day.

This thread is useless without photos.

I remember being impressed with how quiet they were. Huge machine too.

One could go watch the James Bond movie Thunderball as well.

I saw that one, or one of them, right after the Falklands thing. It visited Randolph AFB along with a Harrier. It flew over our building at about treetop level.

A beautiful aircraft - saw it at airshow several years ago.
It only had ejection seats for the pilot & co pilot - the 3 remaining crew members were screwed if it went down.

Wow, I’ve got a photo I took of one at the Farnborough Show in 1964 or 65, together with the latest and greatest in passenger jets - the VC10 !!

It is impressive to watch on a low fly-by.

A picture taken by a friend at the Southport Air Show we attended a year ago.
