A firm handshake is usually seen as a good thing in business and even in politics.
Not so much in South Florida. A candidate for the Broward County School Board wants the cops to lock up her opponent after what she claims was akin to battery after a recent debate.
Jaemi Levine filed a complaint with the Broward Sheriff's Office claiming David Thomas squeezed her hand so hard during a post-debate handshake Tuesday that it now hurts.
Instead of getting a grip on education issues, Thomas decided to get a grip on his opponent for the Disctrict 4 seat.
Levine alleges Thomas was upset that she outclassed him during the debate in Tamarac, which led to the Kung Fu-grip handshake and a few mumbled harsh words to get his point across.
"Don't ever question my integrity again," Thomas allegedly told Levine as he delivered the crunching handshake.
Thomas, a social science teacher at J.P. Taravella High School and a retired U.S. Navy Lt. Commander, told the Sun-Sentinel the story is non-sense and he didn't purposely injure Levine.
BSO has not decided what to do with the criminal complaint yet, but don't be surprised if Levine shows up in a hand cast at the next debate with armed body guards to get her point across.
But as the saying goes in South Florida, sticks and stones may break some bones, but it's the handshake that will really hurt you.

Liberals tend to have very weak handshakes. Some merely extend their hand palm-down, in a “kiss my ring” manner.
Many liberal women also have weak handshakes.
Well, there are plenty of guys who try to use a handshake to prove they are the alpha gorilla. I find it a useful indicator, because that’s all I need to know they are people to be avoided in future business and personal relations. But filing a criminal compliant seems like a typical whiny liberal action, so who knows what the real story is here?
Are we now going to have to monitor the amount of pressure on the hand during handshakes? How do we do that? Will there be handshake lawyers? Is there any limit to the neurosis that we Americans are afflicted with?
If she can't handle this type of thing, she has no business holding public office. She'll face lots worse there.

Could I ask that you expand on this, Jeeves? I am one of those alpha gorillas but unintentionally so. I was raised in a family where the handshake was a symbol of confidence and assurance to the other shaker that you are a real man. I do not go out of my way to death grip those who I meet, but at six foot two, 275 lb., you have to expect that I am not going to offer up a limp-wristed, half-hearted shake.
I am actually appalled at how many businessmen and women eschew the handshake as outdated. I recently met our new CIO, who is considerably shorter than me, and when I shook his hand, I felt like I was going to break his arm. His reciprocating shake was about as enthusiastic as Obama on Christianity.
Why would you go so far as to avoid someone who gave you a hearty handshake? Or are you speaking specifically about the gents who shake so hard that your fingers do not even bend?

I’m speaking of intentional infliction of pain. All a handshake is supposed to be is proof that neither party has weapons in their hands. There is nothing friendly about applying a death grip - it says “ I might have to shake your hand, you bastard, but I don’t have to like it!” And the other party might have arthritis or hand problems. If hurts them - for whatever reason - you’re doing it wrong. :)
Ah, okay! When I shake a hand, I usually go in on the firm side and adjust accordingly. I’ve had big bears of men death grip me, and I reciprocate, while I’ve had men with no confidence just offer a spaghetti noodle of a handshake.
Then there’s the overly-assertive businesswoman who slams her hand into yours and awkwardly overshakes with some sort of feigned enthusiasm.
That’s an interesting historical tidbit on the weapons. I’d never considered the historical side of the handshake. Off to Lexis Nexis to research it!
Im always amazed so many men have hands softer than a “babies butt” when I shake their hands. That may be fine for a surgeon but pick a rake or something every now or then.
Right on! I have what could be described as a “firm” handshake. It is not my intent to intimidate anyone. What I’m saying is that I’m a confident and direct person. In my 67 years of life experience I’ve found, for the most part, that people with weak handshakes are................weak. I’ve also observed that people with weak handshakes tend to be leery of people with firm handshakes. One could make the argument that the weak hand shaker is intimidated by the firm hand shaker. But in my experience weak hand shakers who, generally rely on deceit to get ahead, know the firm hand shaker will be a threat to their deceit.
Suing a firm hand-shaker is right up there with suing the provider of hot coffee because you put the cup between your legs and spilled it. Or remember when in NY during a Lazio/Hillery debate, the media screamed that Lazio “assaulted” Hillery when he “invaded” her debate space to hand her a piece of paper. Right up to that point the media was extolling Hillery as being the strongest woman in the world. Suddenly she’s the weaker sex being assaulted by the brutish male.

Yep, that's the answer to a firm handshake. If you meet his/her hand all the way to where the the thumb and forefinger stops it you will never be crushed because you are gripping the knuckles and beyond. Most women just give you the end of the four fingers handshake and end up getting the fingers crushed.
Just watched W.C. Fields in The Bank Dick the other night. The bank manager wants to reward him for catching the robbers, so he offers his hand in a “hearty handclasp”. The camera pans to his grip. The manager places three fingers on WC’s palm, like a dog’s paw. I cracked up.
Bullies like to play victim when they can find the opportunity to do so.
