US 9TH REP. STEVE COHEN: GEORGE WASHINGTON & THOMAS JEFFERSON WERE CAREER POLITICIANS
wreg ^ | 10/30/10 | N/A

Posted on 10/31/2010 11:28:59 AM PDT by GailA

Steve Cohen, who greeted voters at a Democratic event several blocks away in Midtown, said that he had in fact been a part of historic bills to give people tax breaks, not tax hikes.

"We voted on the largest tax breaks in United States history in the 111th Congress. In fact, the stimulus bill was 40 percent tax breaks. There have been more tax breaks for 95 percent of the citizens of the middle class," Cohen said.

Cohen is not knocking on doors this weekend, but is still passing out his signature buttons that he said he likes to collect.

He said that it is in fact a difficult year for some of his Democratic colleagues, but that he is not nervous himself. He remains unfazed by some demands to remove people who seem to be Washington insiders.

"We know how Washington works; we're effective at making it work. That's been my life. Some people say we don't need anymore career politicians, but Thomas Jefferson was a career politician and so was George Washington," Cohen said.

I totally agree that Jefferson did not use politics to become wealthy like today’s pols. Same thing with Hamilton. In fact, these people became poor because of politics. Whether we side with Jefferson or Hamilton in their many arguments, we can all agree (at least us Freepers can) that they and the other Founders saw politics as a public service, not a means to gain power and wealth for themselves.

I think the word which makes the distinction between Washington and Jefferson versus the modern crop, is statesmen. Unlike the politicians of today, neither of them aspired to be Monarch, and Washington turned the post down.

Both of them worked for a future for their countrymen. Personal gain appears to have been on the back burner for them. They made real sacrifices and took very real risks for the cause of freedom from English rule.

The majority of the crop of politicians we have today are but a pale shadow at best.

Thanks GailA.

Ordinarily this would not be considered pingworthy, but due to my flawed character, I want everyone's blood to stay boiling through the dawn of Wednesday.

Another major difference is that today we have people that enter politics with good intentions but get corrupted by the system. Our Founders were not corrupted. When Jefferson became President, he launched an investigation into Hamilton and his bank and couldn’t find anything he did wrong, though he disagreed with the whole idea of the bank. Today, there is corruption under every stone, even by those we think of as incorruptible.

Boy is this guy Cohen a solid gold idiot. If General Washington was such a career politician, why did he leave the office of POTUS after two terms and head back to Martha and the farm?

If he just shut up, we would think he was just another liberal, but now we know he is an ignorant dumbass liberal (yeah, it's redundant).

He may have been (marginally) right about Thomas Jefferson, but dead wrong on Geo. Washington.

I still wonder how Mr. Jefferson would react to what the Democrats have done with his party. Particularly their stand on Gun Control(tm).

“Find me men (or women) the equals of Washington or Jefferson and I'll let them stay as long as they want. Instead we now have a flood of Aaron Burrs and Benedict Arnolds.”

Agree, and STRONGLY AGREE!!!! Although I think a nation only gets men or women) like those once in its lifetime. Unfortunately for US. We're doomed, I tell ya. Only thing left to do is keep fighting while they drag us to the gallows.
