WASHINGTON – Federal health regulators have decided not to approve an experimental diet pill called Qnexa, which had been touted by many experts as the most promising weight-loss drug in more than a decade.

The drug's maker, Vivus Inc., said in a statement Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration declined to approve the drug in its present form. The agency asked for more study results and additional information on its possible health risks, including major cardiovascular events and risks for women of childbearing potential.

I dunno. It’s hard to have an informed opinion without knowing a lot about the science. Anyone remember fen-phen?

Somebody give Don Rumsfeld a call. He got aspartame approved, and if he can get that poison approved, he can get the FDA to approve anything.

Nothing is without any risk for every person. On the other hand, obesity carries known, grave risks. Give people good information on what risks are known, and stop playing Mommy to them, let them make up their own minds. I personally have lost a great deal of weight as a side effect of a medication I have had to take this year. I can’t say I’m sorry about that.

I’ve tried that one, and it has shown results in the past.

We are in the midst of an Obesity Crisis of epic proportions, and they're worried about heart and pregnancy risks???

There's a War on Fat, and sacrifices must be made.

I’ve worked in Big Pharma for 20 years. Now hear this! There is no such thing as a safe diet drug, a safe anti-obesity drug, or safe additives to foods that promise weight loss or freedom from fat content, like Olestra in the 1990s.

That’s so old fashioned!

Much easier to take a little pill to solve your problems.

Now I never need to take personal responsibility for my own health!

lots of chubbies might be helped by cutting out all carbs and sugar.

Check out the “paleo” diet... healthy fats should be half of your diet, with natural proteins next, and carbs only from above ground veggies and fruits.

Works like a charm, but keep it secret, ok!

Yeah that’s me.......Me and my crazy “Old Fashioned” ideas...... Like eat less... move more! Take responsiblity for what you eat and repurcussions if you eat nothing but crap and do nothing but lay on the couch...

I sure do. I work in Big Pharma, so I knew better. In the late '90s , I wanted to lose weight as my first child was on the way and I wanted to live long enough to see him get through college as I was 40 pounds over weight. I really like my internist, but she wanted to put me on fen-phen. There was then a 30 minute conversation that had me educating her. Question your doctor. Every time.

Sounds like the Atkins diet, which works at losing weight but fails as patients have no energy.

If someone decides to use drugs as part of a plan to reduce their obesity, how is that NOT taking personal responsibility for their own health?

I did it too, back in 2002. Lost a ton of weight...and my will to live. To each his own body chemistry, I guess.

Do you agree then with the FDA’s decision on this drug? The FDA is notoriously risk averse. Many drugs have been delayed or kept off the market. Even then, trial lawyers are ready to swoop if there is a hint of unexpected side effects. I am surprised that any new drugs get developed with roadblocks that must be navigated.

There certainly are people with weight problems through no fault of their own, but the majority of Americans are just plain lazy and eat way too much junk.

Look at kids these days. They rarely ever go play outside after school like we used to. They plant their butts and watch tv, use computer to play video games, or text and talk on the cel phone for hours. No wonder the fat epidemic.

Those magic little pills can cause serious side effects down the road. I’d rather do things the old fashioned way than go that route if I possibly can.

You said a lot of things but did not answer my question.

You had inferred that people are not taking responsibility for their health if they take a weight loss drug.

I asked you how that was irresponsible.

You have not answered.

I just think taking pills really isn’t the answer for weight loss.

The real answer is simple: eat right and exercise.

It’s a lifestyle change. Sure, you can take your chances with pills. What happens when you stop the pills and fall into the same old habits? Weight gain all over again.

As I said it’s a lifestyle change that’ll make the difference. Not pills.

You still have not answered the question. You said

““...Much easier to take a little pill to solve your problems.

Now I never need to take personal responsibility for my own health!””

I asked you how it was not responsible for a person to use pills as part of their weight loss program.

Oh...I get it! You aren’t going to answer. You were really just taking cheap shots at “fat people” because as everyone knows, they are only overweight because they are stupid, lazy and irresponsible. Oh, and they don’t have the “lifestyle” that you do.

Is it also irresponsible to use drugs to reduce cholesterol? After all, just change your lifestyle, and you won’t have high cholesterol.

How about high blood pressure? Is it ok to use drugs to fight that? High blood pressure is caused by lifestyle, right? It’s their own damn fault! They should just relax. Change their lifestyle, you know?

How about smoking cessation aids? Is a person irresponsible because they use nicotine replacements to quit smoking? What a bunch of wimps! Just stop smoking already. Don’t need to use those drugs. Wouldn’t want to be “irresponsible”.

I could go on but you probably don’t get the point and never will.

The self righteous never do.
