Organized labor is deeply worried about what happens after Tuesday.
By many measures, labor unions have been the Republicans’ fiercest, biggest-spending opponents in this year’s campaign, laying out more than $200 million in hopes of safeguarding the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.
So it should be no surprise that Republicans, who appear to stand a good chance of winning control of the House or Senate, are signaling that they plan to push bills and strategies to undermine labor’s political clout and ability to grow.
“Republicans are likely to pursue a version of what Samuel Gompers often said: ‘Reward your friends and punish your enemies,’ ” said Joseph McCartin, a labor historian at Georgetown University.
One bill that is popular among Republicans would prohibit employers from ever agreeing to unionization through “card check,” a process often used today in which an employer recognizes a union as soon as a majority of workers sign pro-union cards — without holding a secret-ballot election. Another bill would severely crimp labor’s campaign spending by barring unions from using any portion of a union member’s dues money for political purposes unless the member first gives written permission.
A Republican-led House or Senate is expected to be more eager than a Democratic-controlled one to approve free trade agreements that unions oppose, and to be more reluctant to enact stimulus plans that unions have supported, like the recent bill that gave states $26 billion to help save the jobs of teachers, police and other government employees. A Republican-controlled House or Senate would probably block a labor-backed bill that would give firefighters and police officers in every state the right to unionize.

President Kennedy’s Executive Order 10998, allowing Federal unions, is what opened the door for public sector unions at the state and local level, which is leading to bankruptcy from bloated public sector salaries, benefits, and retirement plans. Businesses that offered plans like many governments have would go bankrupt. Gov’t entities will, too, eventually, but it will be much more painful.
This is why unions should again be outlawed for public employees.

Beck vs CWA, the unions hated it, part of the ruling was that the import of the decision had to be publicly posted, ie., the unions had to tell the members they could get a refund of that portion of their dues used for political purposes.
I’ve heard that as soon as Clinton took office the “Beck” notices came down and never went back up, I know it happened in my office.

Actually that's as bad as forcing someone to join a union in order to work. Both involve the heavy hand of government. Only public unions should be made illegal. Public “servants” should not be permitted to unionize against The People.
MrB wrote with much wisdom on the issue. Eliminate government/union collusion, and most of the unions will dry up on their own. Those that actually serve their employees and produce good results will survive. In a free society, what business is it of you or I to tell someone that cannot voluntarily associate with others to try and better their pay and benefits?

As it stands now, so long as a union acts unilaterally and in its own interest, it is immune from claims its conduct restrains trade. This was not always the case. Before the 1914 Clayton Act and the 1932 Norris Laguardia Act, "a combination of laborers to obtain a raise in wages was itself a prohibited monopoly" under the Sherman Act.
Ascribing monopoly status to trade unions did not effectively end until Norris Laguardia - passed March 23, 1932.
If you believe, as I do, that financial markets reflect what legislation will be good for the economy and which will not provide benefit, the DJIA chart for March 1932 is revealing.
The Norris LaGuardia Act, at least in concept, had been before the Congress for a number of years. One of its primary features was to prohibit a "labor injunction." On March 7, 1932, 4 were killed when police fired on 3,000 unemployed workers marching at the Ford River Rouge plant.
Mid December through March of 1932 may be characterized as consolidation, with the DJIA trading in a stable range. The last "top" in this chart pattern is March 8. The average ten moves down to the depression bottom. The market probably knew Norris Laguardia passage was a forgone conclusion within 1 1/2 days of the River Rouge incident.
Now, 80 years later we have the wreckage the 1932 market predicted. 2010 Deitroit.
