Posted on 11/01/2010 4:15:09 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet
The first African-American president takes office, and almost immediately we see the birth of a big, passionate national movement overwhelmingly white and lavishly funded that tries its best to delegitimize that president, seeks to thwart his every initiative and manages to bring the discredited and moribund opposition party roaring back to life. Coincidence?
Not a chance. But also not that simple.
First, I'll state the obvious: It's not racist to criticize President Obama, it's not racist to have conservative views, and it's not racist to join the Tea Party. But there's something about the nature and tone of the most vitriolic attacks on the president that I believe is distinctive and difficult to explain without asking whether race is playing a role.
One thing that struck me from the beginning about the Tea Party rhetoric is the idea of reclaiming something that has been taken away.
At a recent campaign rally in Paducah, Ky., Senate candidate Rand Paul, a darling of the Tea Party movement, drew thunderous applause when he said that if Republicans win, "we get to go to Washington and take back our government." Take it back from whom? Maybe he thinks it goes without saying, because he didn't say.
On Sunday, in a last-minute fundraising appeal, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee implored his supporters to help "return American government to the American people." Again, who's in possession of the government right now, if not the American people? The non-American people? The un-American people?
There's an obvious answer, but it's one that generally comes from the progressive end of the political spectrum: Americans must fight to take back their government from the lobbyists and big-money special interests that shape our laws to suit their own interests, not for the good of the nation...

Eugene doesn’t get it - it isn’t the blackness of Obama that voters are rebelling against, it’s the redness.
If Mr. Robinson wasn’t such a racist, he would know that.
Someone tell this idiot whites got him elected...and Huckabee was right...return the Government to the American people for the Bolsheviks have it now....
Hard to believe that Eugene isnt a race baiter...
He still can’t explain why so many supposed racists voted for Obama in the first place.
...But there’s something about the nature and tone of the most vitriolic attacks on the president bla bla bla
Does he not recall the constant attacks on Pres Bush?
What a pathetic piece this is. He can’t get past the race card.
Actually, if the predictions are right that TEA Party black conservatives elected this year will constitute the largest number of black Republicans in Congress since Reconstruction, it will be very easy to argue just that.
Robinson better thank God every day for his black skin, which has enabled him to ride the race horse all his life while being paid handsomely for it. If it weren’t for affirmative action, many prominent Blacks would be running resale shops in ghettos.
Eugene Robinson is such an idiot and a race panderer. If he were not of the African American persuasion, he would be reduced to writing fortunes for Chinese fortune cookies.
Robinson is correct- its’ not hard for race baiters like him to claim the ire’ against the child in the WH is not based on race...
oh and btw- isn’t obama half white??? since i despise his policies, agenda and consider him a demagogue wouldn’t this this make me a self-hating white man??
The commies -- that's who.
Hey, Mr. Robinson -- how many paranoids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
The race card is toast.
It’s a high crime that our first ~black president wasn’t Sowell, Cane, West or Williams, any one of them I would crawl over broken glass for.
Put all of these patriots in the admin asap in ‘12. Show the nation their exceptionalism in the meantime.
The truth is that the left uses race to effect the vote because they know Americans are not racist and very sensitive to the subject.
If we were racist this tactic would have hurt Obama not helped him therefore they would have never implemented it in the first place.
Q: How many Social Workers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Only one, but the light bulb has to want to change.
Let me tell you something Eugene, you leftist media slut, you should be down on your commie two left knees and thanking God (someone you’ll never know you prick!) that you were born an American! You stinking godless POS! YOU’RE the racist you putrid piece of dreck!
How sad for Robinson. He only has one card in his deck. So he chooses to keep playing it over and over and over.
If it wasn’t for his racism, Robinson wouldn’t have a job as a writer.
It is a true pity that our Firt Black President is a communist.
Hey, Eugene. Why don’t you just move on to the back, have a seat, and shut up?
It’s OK to say things like that, right? The _resident does.
