Skip to comments.CALIFORNIA: Most votes already cast in state's long election

The election campaign that never seemed to end finally reaches the finish line today as an estimated 9.5 million voters will cast ballots across California.
While polls elsewhere in the country suggest the possibility of a Republican sweep that could grab control of the House from Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats and possibly capture the Senate, there's no guarantee that a GOP wave will make it past the Sierra Nevada.
In the top-of-the-ticket races, Democrats Barbara Boxer and Jerry Brown and Republicans Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman closed out their efforts Monday by once again barnstorming the state in a final attempt to push their supporters to the polls today.
But those pleas were lost on most of the state's voters, since a new Field Poll survey estimates that, for the first time ever in a general election, more than half of the votes today will have been cast before election day.
About 55 percent of the votes in today's election will have arrived by mail, said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll. That means that any candidate or ballot measure that falls far behind when those first early ballots are tallied minutes after the polls close at 8 p.m. will have a tough, uphill road the rest of the night.
The nationwide interest in this year's campaigns doesn't seem to have boosted turnout in California, DiCamillo added.
Voter turnout "is pretty flat compared to what we saw four years ago," he said. "We'll have more people voting, but the percentage will be about a point lower."

We get to go out this am & vote against Boxtard & moonbat one more time. God willing, the last time we have to do that.
That could be a good sign for Carly and Meg.
Its 7:39am here in LA. just got back. there was a small line 20 minutes before the polling place opened. all they did was ask my name and my address. i showed up with drivers license, passport, mil id, blood, DNA and $%#* sample.
i overheard one of the pollworkers say “we cant ask for id” “their signature is their id” WTF?
I think early voting should be abolished. Pure fraud opportunity for weeks on end. I’m supposed to trust that democrats in charge of everything here in California won’t cheat?
They can’t ask, but I make a point of showing mine.
(thanks for the reminder to bring my passport)
I’m ambivalent. Early voting defangs last minute smears.
Forget the polls, forget the media spin. Go to the ballot box and put an end to the Dem Party. Throw this putrid congress out on their heads.
This ain't going to end well for these Statists
The Rats are shovel-ready for the dust bin of history.
I ALWAYS show my ID (mostly for spelling of my last name) as a partial point. The partial point is I believe we should identify who we are before we vote and sign that line next to that name. Outside of that I pray one more time California will come up huge... This election is about JOBS JOBS JOBS! Boxer the business killer and Brown the union clown or the two successful job creators Whitman and Fiorina. Is this not a NO BRAINER!
I was actually asked for my driver’s license when I voted in central NC. That was nice.
I know. A no brainer. I’m going to vote at 7 pm tonight against Boxer and Jerry Brown. I can’t believe we might be about to elect one of Jim Jones’ best friends as governor of CA!
I do not like the way election day has turned into a long, slow-motion process with many different options for voting. That leads to a long, slow-motion counting process. A government run program needs to be as simple as possible just to avoid unintentional errors. Our more complicated process invites errors. Then there is the intentional type of error. The opportunities for fraud increase with every change. I don't think that is entirely accidental. After all, Democrats run this state.
Agree it’s how the democrats have held on to the state for so long.LA county is owned by progressives but the rest of the state has a chance to do the right thing because the cheaters don’t stray far from LA no cover for them.
