Imagine a future when a Soldier's helmet is an integrated communications center with a heads-up computer display, night vision, thermal sensors and enhanced hearing. That future is nearer than many think.
During the 2010 Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting Oct. 25-27 at the Washington Convention Center, civilian researchers from the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center displayed futurist equipment design concepts to senior Army leaders, congressional staffers and Soldiers attending the show.
"What we're trying to do is tell the story of how we're setting the force for the future," said Jean-Louis "Dutch" DeGay, Strategic Outreach, Natick Soldier RDEC

Futuristic? Will it tell us if Nancy cries when she loses the gavel?

Note to users of the new helmet; While you’re fiddling with the controls of your helmet, make sure the guy with the AK doesn’t sneak up and club you silly from behind.

I have a little inside knowledge of some of this research... and it’s definitely very, very cool stuff.
I don’t know what it’ll look like when it finally hits the battlefield, but some of the prototypes have been just wicked.

It does sound like a fantastic tool for the soldier.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

It is... Imagine this:
An integrated headgear (helmet, face/eye protection) that has:
- blast and ballistic protection (some, anyway...)
- heads up display of area map
- map locations of known bad guys
- target locations
- live GPS locations of friendlies
- online with command data center in real time
- integrated Chem/Bio mask
- integrated night vision / thermo
Schweet...

Oh... and I forgot:
- heads up picture of the rifle sight.
You have a little virtual screen that shows the reticle of your rifle scope. Point it around a corner, and see what your scope sees. Schweet. :-)

The soldiers are already used to video games. Might as well be in an augmented reality war.
