Sacramento's Dave Jones emerged the winner Wednesday in a high-dollar battle to be California's insurance commissioner, becoming one of six Democrat victors in the seven down-ticket races for statewide offices.
The seventh race is a political cliffhanger for attorney general hopefuls Kamala Harris, a Democrat, and Republican Steve Cooley. Hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots haven't yet been counted, and the race for the state's top law enforcer is tight enough that the late votes will determine the outcome.
Regardless of that race's result, the down-ticket balloting confirmed that California is a solidly Democratic state.
"The Republicans in California had some strong down-ticket candidates lieutenant governor, insurance commissioner, attorney general," said Jack Citrin, director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley. "But they couldn't get much done."
Democratic incumbents who won re-election were Debra Bowen, secretary of state; Bill Lockyer, treasurer; and John Chiang, controller.
The newcomers to statewide office are Jones and San Francisco Democratic Mayor Gavin Newsom and Assemblyman Tom Torlakson, D-Pittsburg.
Newsom beat Republican incumbent Abel Maldonado of Santa Maria to win the race for lieutenant governor.

Geez..I feel bad for the conservatives out there. How horrible.
Shall we take bets on how long it will be before CA collapses completely?
Hey, Arnold gave it a valiant effort his first year, but then he had to think about life once he got back to Hollywood.
Gov. Pothead McMoonbeam and Lt. Gov. Any Twosome Newsome. Good going, California!
Oh, and by the way... all that talk about you being the "leading edge" of cultural change in America -- There's no truth to it, so get over yourselves.
But I don't want the new Republican Congress to permit a bailout of California or New York or Illinois or other bastions of runaway liberalism. The rest of the country wants to cut back on free-spending.
The sooner the better. No benefit to be had in dragging out the inevitable.

They could have tourism commercials that say- “Visit California, were not Detroit -yet.”
I actually think this is setting the stage for an attempted take-over by Mexico, via economic collapse, social upheaval and a heavy presence of armed “separatist” thugs out in the streets.
Probably not for another 5-10 years... but I see it coming.
Whether or not it will bear its intended “fruit” is another question... but I do think the attempt will take place and that the current insane leftist-induced economic collapse will be the catalyst.
Their heading for the cliff. Why stop now? The people have spoken. Mass Suicide...aka Jim Jones syndrome.
They need a Sarah palin type to emerge, shake up and reorganize following a Tea Party model.
The public just doesn’t trust professional politicians, analysts nor consultants.
As the major port for Asian trade and great tourist amenities, California has natural advantages that Detroit never had. That it has mimicked Detroit only shows how badly libs are bungling things.
I see no circumstances were there can be a turnaround and yes I'm a life long California Republican wondering when my time is up in this State.
If I remember correctly there was a proposition on the ballot in California about global warming, did it pass?
Prop 23 failed.
Typical California voters.
Sigh.
90% of Calif Counties voted Republican; 10% voted Dimocrat.
The 10% are located on the coast. These 10% hold the vast majority of the population. The State sould be split on a north-south line into West California and East California.
(Better name: Crazy Nutsafornia and Sane California.)
Atlas will eventually shrug....
Response: The "Coalition" must get rid of Proposition 13 first, then they can steal the last item of middle class wealth in the State.
It’ll be Harris, either in the count or the recount. After all, the Secretary of State is a democrat.
The only explanation I can see for the failure of Prop 19 is that the voting of Californians shows they are already totally stoned.
