34 Warships Rumors Are Not True
Stars And Stripes ^ | November 4, 2010 | Jeff Schogol

Rumors are running rampant about President Barack Obama’s upcoming trip to India, including one that he has dispatched a flotilla of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, to provide security while he is in Mumbai starting on Saturday.

“The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea,” according to a story by Press Trust of India, which did not indicate where this information came from. Nevertheless, it was the lead story on the Drudge Report on Thursday morning.

Even Teddy Roosevelt, who sent The Great White Fleet around the world, might find sending that many warships a tad excessive, so The Rumor Doctor decided to delve into the matter.

Sure enough, there are not 34 ships – and there isn’t an aircraft carrier – supporting the president’s trip, said a defense official, who declined to provide any information on security measures for presidential trips.

This isn’t the Olympics or a major multi-national summit. It is a Presidential visit. Either way, the 34 ship rumor is false.

A more likely scenario?

When the criticism began to take root and bite those who supported and conceived of the trip pushed the 37 Ship story which appears to be false.. When they stood on the story the idea is that criticism of the real extravagances will be blunted/less effective.

So, this article is based on a tip by an anonymous defense official who refuses to say anything about how many ships there are? Wow, that's convincing evidence!

Are you convinced by the story about the 34 ships in the "Press Trust of India, which did not indicate where this information came from"?

First off this story is BS.

An aircraft carrier is not some floating island but rather a platform for Air operations and it is, in fact, part of a flotilla.

Based on the who and what else he is taking with him to India, I wouldn’t plan a trip anywhere near Washington D.C. while he is out of the country. A shrewd dictator might see it as a gathering place of his enemies and return after the huge unfortunate crisis with great powers, martial law and his regulatory entourage intact.
This trip has a kind of 1930’s echo to it.

> “Probably 70 ships.” <

There probably will be at least an Amphibious Readiness Group nearby with a Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard to rescue The One if needed... at least five ships from the “Gator Navy.”

Wow. I wish we were all as smart as you.

Hey, common sense is a gift, but it's not all that uncommon.

As for you: grow up.

The military does not want anyone knowing what they are doing around Obama’s trip. So...who knows if the initial info is wrong was was leaked wrongly and in need of denial for security reasons.

Still racking my brains to figure out why he would need all these warships in the first place . . . but then, I got to thinking . . . he probably told his staff that he wanted many to worship him, and they thought he said “warship.”

Now that they got the memo - they are all falling on their kneepads.

Having served aboard one for six months, I’m pretty sure I know what one is.

"There is not an aircraft carrier supporting the president’s trip"

This is a "not an aircraft carrier"
