Obama: "Leadership Isn't Just Legislation"
After Midterm Defeat, Humbled President Acknowledges Failures in Exclusive "60 Minutes" Interview
(CBS) After a suffering a "shellacking" in the midterm elections, President Obama acknowledges what many have seen as his chief weakness - failing to sell the importance of several legislative milestones to the American people.
"I think that's a fair argument. I think that, over the course of two years we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that, we stopped paying attention to the fact that leadership isn't just legislation. That it's a matter of persuading people. And giving them confidence and bringing them together. And setting a tone," Mr. Obama told 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft in an exclusive interview set to air Sunday. (See clip below)
"Making an argument that people can understand," Mr. Obama continued, "I think that we haven't always been successful at that. And I take personal responsibility for that. And it's something that I've got to examine carefully as I go forward."
Republicans enjoyed significant victories Tuesday, wresting control of the House of Representatives from the Democrats and picking up six seats in the Senate, as frustration over the economy drove voter sentiment.
A humbled Mr. Obama, who termed the defeat a "shellacking" during a postelection press conference Wednesday, must now grapple with an emboldened and empowered political enemy with its sights set on undoing much of what he accomplished in the last two years - including an effort to repeal his signature achievement, health care reform, reports CBS News White House correspondent Bill Plante.
Watch the entire exclusive interview with President Obama on 60 Minutes this Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
Nobody was buying what he was selling.
Stop saying we're stupid. It's not about selling...it's about socialism.
What is exclusive about interviewing someone who is interviewed by everyone?
Yep
Passing Obama Care to “SAVE” his presidency is not how legislation is supposed to be enacted
Tell Obama I didn’t hear him because I was in the back of the bus.
The peasants are too stupid to undrstand my brilliance - B. Hussein Obama.
The American Jobs should hire 150,000 just to keep up with growth.
“The problem is not that we were trying to polish a turd, but that we didn’t polish it shiny enough.”
Apparently the peasants are to stupid to undrstand how to spell understand, too! ;-P
CBS trying to prop up a President and his rejected policies.
But that's just it, he does think we're stupid. Worse, he thinks he is brilliant, and has to fool all us stupid people into letting him take charge of our lives.
That's a disastrous combination--thinking you have all the answers for someone you don't respect, when you can barely read a sentence off a teleprompter.
70+ rounds of golf tends to take their toll.
“I have no choice but to conclude that you people are clueless and unable to accept reality.”
Excellent point. This was the message that came through loud and clear to me. Newsflash: We HEARD your message, hated your message, and now have rejected your message.
Obama comes from a background that has their leaders spout off all kinds of rhetorical crap and the sheep just blindly follow and shout praise as they speak. (ie Rev Wright) It doesn’t work that way in our country as a whole. Go back to community organizing where you are loved and adored. Leave the Presidency to a grownup.

We heard this same crap from Democrats in the 1990s.
Excuse me Mr President a bunch of stuff? What exactly do you mean when you say a bunch of stuff?
Well you know, er, er, er stuff. I don't get lost in the details, er, er you know I don't actually read this stuff but I do know Harry and Nancy er, er, have sent me a bunch of stuff to sign.
I wonder how many folks truly know what a meadow muffin is.. LOL
Great analogy too..
There goes CBS News White House correspondent Bill Plante, calling Republicans "the enemy" (just repeating his master's talking points, I guess)...
Obama and his supporting “professional” politicians presented us a flawed program and everyone knew it. Then as more details came out and “we have to pass the bill before we know what is in it” statements were made the distrust went even higher.
IMHO, the first half of Obama’s rule coupled with all of their openly and freely made statements have poisoned the only political well within two years. Everything the ruleing party and Emperor Obama attempt during the next twenty-four months will be viewed against what has happen in the previous twenty odd months. After, there is no other record on Obama’s performance to use is there?
If Obama and his supporting “professional” politicians are stupid enough to make the forthcoming lame duck session their final push the next two years will be even harder on them.
Odds of them learning to pull back - very slim to none.
