For the losing side: How to handle the post-election hangover
By Stephanie Chen, CNN
November 3, 2010 4:57 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- For weeks -- even months -- you may have been caught up in the election frenzy. You've been jazzed about a candidate or a cause. Perhaps you've volunteered for a campaign or proudly planted a sign in your yard.

The results are announced and the winners start celebrating their campaign victory, but for the losers, an election loss can easily turn personal.

CNN spoke to Dr. Ivan Walks, a public health physician and psychiatrist who has studied stress for more than two decades, about post-election blues. He is the former chief health officer for the District of Columbia.

CNN: Does post-election stress exist among voters?

Dr. Ivan Walks: Absolutely. People really engage in politics because they know things can change. When their candidate loses, they can be profoundly disappointed, and it can lead to negative things.

People can also spend a lot of money [during an election]. When you personally go out and get people to write the checks and your team loses, there's a certain sense of obligation, and you feel bad. I have met people who talk about how embarrassed they are, and how they feel like their judgment is being questioned by those around them. They feel like they've lost a certain amount of respect in their community.

Stay put is fine, if you wish to allow California to remain in the wrong camp. It’s much too precious to allow that.

It’s capable of being the fourth or even third power on the planet. We don’t surrender that to anyone.

We need more minutemen out here, now less.

I certainly understand where Dennis is coming from. He’s frustrated too.

I think Dennis would agree with you, except that if you own a business, California taxes and regulations are pretty scary. And one way to punish leftist economic policies is for businesses to walk away. None of us wants Cal. to remain miserable, but I would hope that economic reality would make voters want to change course.

What inspired Dennis to say that was the SF board of supervisors said the principle behind the Happy Meal toy regulation was "food justice!"

RE “For the losing side: How to handle the post-election hangover (PEST: Post Election Stress Trauma)...”

I have the PERFECT solution - especially for all those green, enviro-freakie liberals who are absolutely distraught about this...

You know how they’re always whining about saving the planet, reducing the carbon footprint, reducing the population, etc.?

Here’s the PERFECT SOLUTION: All you Libs out there - LEAD BY EXAMPLE! Simply Off yourselves! Take yourselves out!

1. You can can jump off a bridge into the water, thereby returning yourselves to “nature” and becoming part of the food chain (that falls under “Save The Animals”)...another good method would be to walk into the nearest Protected WIldlife Reserve, walk up to the first Grizzly bear you find, and simply slap it on the rump...Think of it! You’re feeding the wildlife AND Saving the planet in one, economical move!

2. Or - if you’re too chickensh*t for that - You simply hold your breath for an hour or so (have a friend use some strategically-placed duct tape to help you - that will REALLY help reduce your carbon footprint... (falls under “Clean Air”)...

3. You can simply shoot yourselves too (Ooops...guns are BAAAAAD - I forgot...nevermind)...

4. There’s any number of ways you can lead by example; if all you libs would do these simple things, why, we’d cut carbon emissions IN HALF!! You’d be saving the planet!!!!

And doing the rest of us a favor...

Just a public service announcement...

(Was that mean? Was that harsh? Do I care?)

On point, I agree with him. I’m just not convinced that surrendering the state of California is a good idea. I look at the price paid for our homeland, and even one death is too high a price to surrender California or any other chunk.

This isn’t meant to be argumentative. We share the same ideals.

One more thing that bothers me, is that small business owners don’t descend on Sacramento, reminding the state leadership how many businesses they are screwing, and how many employees the small businesses employ.

The state leadership is terrified of losing union support. It’s time to let them know that small businesses employ many people who are not benefiting from the state leadership’s decisions focused on small businesses.

To: I still care
This is silly. I’ve been voting since 76, you lose all the time.

I agree. This is silly.

But left-wingers lost. We all know how much they care, and how sensitive they are. We must embrace them in their moment of hurt feelings. We must listen to the Other in his moment of disenfranchisement. Their self-esteem has been hurt, and we must empower them. We must be inclusive and bring them social justice. We must elevate and celebrate them for the sake of diversity. Perhaps we could send all of them some stimulus money.
