Peru (MNN) ― Nine years after the Peruvian air force mistook a missionary flight for a drug run, the Central Intelligence Agency took responsibility for its part in the shoot-down of a plane which killed a missionary, Veronica Bowers, and her infant daughter, Charity.

This was a TOTAL screw up. There was NOTHING about the flight that mimicked typical drug run flights.

I can’t see ANY instance where transporting contraband other than a WMD should lead to an unarmed aircraft being shot down by a “civilized” people.

This was one of the booby traps left in place for Bush by the departing 8 years of Clinton. 9-11 was another.

This very scenario was raised when the drug warriors first proposed this kind of shoot-down, and was scoffed at. The War on Some Drugs is more dangerous than the drugs themselves.

How many actual drug smugglers have ever been shot down?

Who, specifically, were the individuals involved in laying out a booby trap like this, Phil?

This is CIA incompetence. But the news is being released at this time to distract from the election results and blame the incident on Bush.

Bush’s fault. It’s predictable.

The WOD was nothing but an excuse by southern Democrats to put blacks into their prison plantations. There have been literally THOUSANDS of laws passed to allow the government to snoop into your private affairs and to even steal your property under the mere SUSPICION that it MIGHT be connected to the sale of illegal drugs.

All to prevent some guy from smoking a doobie, watching cartoons, and eating Cheetos.

I also find this confusing. There are standard procedures for a military aircraft to order another aircraft to follow them to a base and land. These procedures also assume a radio failure. If a military aircraft comes up beside you and rocks his wings and lowers his gear, follow him. If you do not, he might shoot you down. I did not read anything about what happened prior to the shoot down. I do remember reading about the error but I do not recall anything about radio transmissions or visual instructions from the military aircraft to the civilian aircraft.

For one thing, Bush inherited Clinton’s CIA director, George Tenet, who did indeed sabotage his new boss, until Bush finally fired him.

I don’t think this one was deliberate sabotage. The CIA was getting rather dysfunctional after having been worked over by the Democrats ever since the days of the Church Committee.

It appears we're living in uncivilized times when you're apt to be blown out of the sky without warning to satisfy a quick thrill.

Besides, why are we using our CIA on a stupid mission to waste the lives of desperate people when there are much more important individuals plotting our destruction, that need to be exterminated?

The short answer: The shoot down policy was instituted during the Clinton administration and was likely not reviewed until after the missionary shoot down.

The Clinton administration did not respond to the embassy bombings and the ship attack leaving the terrorists free reign.

Try taking 10K of your hard earned cash out of the country or messing up crew manifest (5K fine) or not reporting crossing the ADIZ within\ 5 mins or blundering into a TFR or ...

I read somewhere that we have more people in prision than the rest of the world combined!

Short of 9/11, where you know the plane is basically a Kamakaze, annd it is solely to save numerous lives on the ground, it’s *never* justified to shoot down a civilian plane.

Saburo Sakai refused orders and risked brutal IJN discipline by refusing to shoot down a dutch DC-3 airliner early in WWII. He pulled alongside first and saw a woman lookig out the window who reminded him of his schoolteacher when he was young. He wave and the pilots and left the area.

Shooting down an unarmed plane in peacetime for legal reasons is the hallmark of a despotic nation.

I am in agreement with you and was merely pointing out procedures in the air and the fact that I suspect these procedures were not followed.

Oh yes! Im sorry if that seemed directed at you. I meant it more as chiming in with you. What you said seems accurate. At least it’s what i’ve always generally believed was the case.

Exactly and the next thing you know, they'll legalize the killing of their unborn children.
